People sometimes talk about “popcorn movies” and “thrill rides” as though they’re easier to make than, say, character dramas, but most of them are terrible and RESIDENT EVIL is incredible, whereas most character dramas are, like, fine

again, the issues with these new mixes is that they are apparently meant to supplant the originals on streaming, and thus become the de facto "official" versions of Beatles songs for the 21st C. it's not vastly different from colorizing Citizen Kane, in a way. will people care? probably not

That’s not how it works! They have a whole provincial rat patrol that exists to find rats and prevent them from breeding! Nobody’s self-image was shattered! The last paragraph of the story basically explains this! Does anyone even care or are we all too busy trying to be cute?

I know everyone's mad at the star of this show for his subsequent questionable antics but there's no rationale for ranking THE OFFICE UK, which absolutely changed the course and tone of TV comedy, lower than THE OFFICE US, which very successfully adapted THE OFFICE UK

It’s understandable that the TV list doesn’t include LONG STORY SHORT, the animated novelistic family comedy now streaming on Netflix, because most people haven’t seen it and as a result have no idea how perfect and wonderful it is www.nytimes.com/2025/08/22/a...

This is just kind of a fascinating thing to know about Jonathan Franzen, including the fact that he volunteered the story in an interview www.theguardian.com/books/2026/s...
In 2010, following the publication of Freedom, Franzen appeared on the cover of Time magazine, a rare achievement for any writer. The piece described him as the “Great American Novelist”. He says it was his suggestion that he should be the cover. He got his publicist to contact Time to say they hadn’t had a writer as a cover star for ages, and Franzen would be great. Wait, what, I ask, shuffling through my notes, doesn’t that piece describe you as “singularly ungifted at what you might call brand management”? “Isn’t that hilarious?” he asks, his eyes widening in delight. “It’s hilarious!”

It’s rare that a specific word is always a mistake but you should basically never use “effortlessly” in criticism. My guess is that AZ Chike worked hard to achieve the proper balance of fury, swagger, and introspection, but unless you were in the studio with him how could you possibly know?
A text screenshot of the headline of a Pitchfork review of the album
No Rest for the Wicked by AZ Chike: "With A&R assistance from Kendrick Lamar, the L.A. rapper shows off his versatility and knack for hooks on an album that effortlessly balances fury, swagger, and introspection."

Lots of people acting like this reveals a contradiction or hypocrisy, but it doesn’t at all. Maybe 33% of people would be better off in a factory, and another 34% of people recognize that the first 33% would be better off in a factory. The question isn’t “would everyone be better off in a factory?”!

I would agree that this Doctorow post not good. This paragraph in particular irks me. I think that a "database of earlier hacking challenges" implies plainly false things about what happened, like that the attack vector was not novel (a previously unknown-by-any-person vulnerability was exploited)

COYOTE VS. ACME is just shockingly good. A tribute to the greatness of Chuck Jones, attached to the kind of solid, funny, properly structured comedy they mostly don’t make anymore. Plays great in a theater. The idea that someone was willing to trade this movie for a tax break is genuinely repulsive

the gravitational well of DC/Marvel warps the "Golden Age of Comics" to refer almost exclusively to wartime superheroes, but the true Golden Age of US comic books was 1946-1954, when romance, horror, western, war, crime, teen, fantasy and sci-fi titles exploded, many of which Kirby helped pioneer.
