I wonder why it's so hard to convince so many Germans that people primarily vote for the AfD because of hate: I think it's because they are ashamed that their colleagues and relatives harbour such views. But that denial is lethal. As a friend told me, "their shame will kill us."

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.
“In Dallas for the premier of '9 to 5', I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, "Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her." We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

Dear Mother, By the time you receive this letter, I hope our long hours of guarding the nation’s Reflecting Pool will be over. The camp has been struck by dysentery from the algae. I thought arresting people for no reason would prove more fun, but all I want now is to return home. Your loving son.

How is Musk the first trillionaire when his companies, combined, lose money? Cult capitalism. The market prices the future he promises as if it already arrived. He’s a pitch-deck trillionaire holding his companies hostage: lose Musk, lose the premium, and the boards know it. Plus the corruption.

I realize this is obvious to most but allow me to rant: At the core of Trump's base love for him is a simmering resentment over their mediocrity and gratitude for him making it permissible to be arrogant whilst mediocre. Everything in this cult can be traced back to that. (thread)

damn aaron swartz tried to warn everybody about sam altman
One of Altman's batch mates in the first Y Combinator cohort was Aaron Swartz, a brilliant but troubled coder who died by suicide in 2013 and is now remembered in many tech circles as something of a sage. Not long before his death, Swartz expressed concerns about Altman to several friends. "You need to understand that Sam can never be trusted," he told one. "He is a sociopath. He would do anything.

Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.
Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...

For those unaware, Space has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take 20+ years.
The mission of SpaceX remains the same: extend consciousness and life as we know it to the stars.
It is only possible to travel to Mars when the planets align every 26 months (six month trip time), whereas we can launch to the Moon every 10 days (2 day trip time). This means we can iterate much faster to complete a Moon city than a Mars city.
That said, SpaceX will also strive to build a Mars city and begin doing so in about 5 to 7 years, but the overriding priority is securing the future of civilization and the Moon is faster.”

Left: When Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawkes wanted to create an example of the unimaginable terror and cruelty of which Nazis were capable, they depicted the inhuman use of a little boy to get at his father. Right: America, 2026.
Comics panel from issue #4 of Black Hammer '45

Image by Matt Kindt: A horrified little boy, terrified and worried about his gravely injured father.

Narration: "They were rocket scientists with precious knowledge.

"And their son was the leverage the Nazis used to keep them working.

"A little boy."

Post from Don Moynihan @donmoyn.bsky.social

Image: A masked gunmen clad entirely in black looms over a 5-year old boy behind a woven-wire fence.

Text: "This guy went to work today, put a mask on, kidnapped a 5 year old child, and then used him as bait so both he and his father could be sent behind bars."
