if you thought the “single family zoning was part of racism” argument was kind of an academic structural / theoretical point, really you only have to barely scratch the f-ing surface to find it alive and very individually defended, as well as also broadly structural

I've said it before, I've said it again: Bluesky has a disproportionate and extremely loud percentage of users who think it's morally righteous to abuse people as long as it's for a good enough cause, and an even larger percentage of users who specialize in justifying why causes are good.

I so enthusiastically over-replied to this post that it made me realize I missed my annual whale watch and I really do need whales in my life From being a 70s child who felt so fervently that we had to save the whales and unsure that we would, to someone seeing a whale without trying, is beautiful

I voted for Sanders twice in primaries. I did so fully aware that the vast majority of my Black family and friends did not trust him. I thought that he was the better choice compared to others in the Dem primaries on policy grounds. There's no way to defend him on this Bannon gambit. It's disgusting

people who shout doom in angry voices and condemn compromisers and “lesser of two evils” voters are often actually driven by a beautiful optimism about what the world could be, optimism which exceeds any reasonable probability, and I love that in them, and also have not that much patience for it

If I am loyal to the most stigmatized and disenfranchised people I am inherently choosing to be regularly disappointed by people elected by majorities of a city or a state. Ironically in my very small elected role in Town Meeting this is also true of how I feel about myself.

“The demand that everyone feel the same thing, at the same intensity, for the same reasons…that someone else's sadness must be treated as a battle line; the conviction that correcting a person's feelings is an urgent contribution to the work—what is all of this for, and who does it actually serve?”

So much of the reaction to this post is Times bad Mamdani good. Taxpayers fund communication that is subject to public records law, including press releases. Campaign operations often use private strategies described in the article to rally influencers. That’s fine IF paid for by campaign money.

Moulton only managed to beat Markey in the wealthy towns within his district. But roughly 64% of the vote came from towns that were neither wealthy nor in his district, meaning he ultimately lost because he underperformed nearly everywhere else.

SHU is solitary confinement, exists in janky county jails, is used way too much (see: confining a psychotic person for being psychotic, next door to Mr Tate) and is not indicative of a level of security except protective custody to protect the incarcerated person from others, as is likely true here

Many people’s definition of “homeless” excludes most people w/o homes. What they mean by “homeless” is “impoverished people with stigmatized disabilities occupying public space”. And they assume the person is basically at fault for their disabilities (like substance use problems & mental illness).
