Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I think the sexual abuse scandals were a deep setback to the forces in the Church that emphasized authority and misogyny, and that this as much as any alliance with evangelicals was part of the rise and fall of anti-abortion political primacy — the biggest anti abortion cardinals went down 110

Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 27/09/2026The “club drugs” in the gay world and their overlap with rape-facilitating drugs in the straight one is a reminder that the gay club scene is often not as cute/hot as it imagines itself, but also, that straight men can often be so much terribly more straightforward about being awful. 010
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Here’s a snappy and helpful harm reduction take on ketamine from the gay world—it’s a complicated drug even in medical settings, even more so in social settings. Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 27/09/2026The drug at lower doses has a stimulating and disinhibiting effect and then in higher doses is dissociative, with paralytic effects (you literally can’t move). The use of ketamine in the woman’s narrative is especially pernicious—being used at low doses by the men, who impose high doses on her. 110
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 27/09/2026A drug whose primary effect is a feeling of dissociation, and at higher doses, has a paralytic effect, has always been a potential horror show when used in risky social settings, and that was/is true even in the gay world that pioneered its non medical use. 110

Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026So: our local zoonoses are absolutely caused by a dysfunctional relationship with nature but via patchwork symbolic _reforestation_ not _deforestation_, and entangled with property patterns that dispossessed people like the Aquinnah Wampanoag, who are still there and would like to have land back 100
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026But the “nature” is not on a natural scale—but on a patchwork scale and with an herbivore-dominated no-scary-animal ecology almost ideally suited to breeding new populations of ticks. 100
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026In other words as white property owners bemoan the “disruption of nature” that has caused the tick explosion, they / we are the ones who produce it. They retell this story by doing things like deeding land to conservation trusts instead of the tribe—to ensure that “nature” remains unperturbed. 100
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026the town of Oak Bluffs, the heart of this community, is not nearly as tick-friendly! Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026You can even see that the most tick-friendly pattern is culturally Anglo—my ancestors who experienced the lords’ enclosures and ran to the Americas to enclose land of their own. Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Being in Aquinnah really highlighted that cultural pattern of an agonized guilty/accusatory relationship to the spoiling of “pure” nature; a story about how “too much development” is causing tick borne disease instead of the _pattern_ of development. 100
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026…but a forest without deer predators. This summer I learned about how the Aquinnah Wampanoag need a housing trust as much as a nature trust. It wasn’t the Wampanoag who divided the land on the island into small plots—a pattern that, with property taxes, dispossessed them in their own town. 100
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026This didn’t play into the estate’s decision I don’t think, but it comes at a time when Martha’s Vineyard has a staggering burden of tick-borne disease. That tick burden is amplified by “conservation”-minded property owners who, like English aristocrats, surround big houses with big plots of “forest” 100
Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026In Aquinnah: the Jackie Onassis estate just gave over a huge plot of land to a develop-nothing “pristine nature” conservation trust instead of the Aquinnah Wampanoag land trust. Joe Wright MD @joewright.bsky.social · 26/09/2026As soon as @colincarlson.bsky.social calls out that monster-movie narrative pattern, we recognize it as a distinctly white American mythology, the story that we will be punished for destroying “nature” …but a version of nature that can not be trusted to the care of non-white people who live there 100
