Newspapers: We're going to have to pay for Burnham's social care plans! Also newspapers: Social care costs took all my savings! We're already paying for social care, just less fairly and probably less efficiently. #R4Today

Far-right activist Daniel Thomas slashes dinghy with blade while rescue worker onboard
Thomas called followers to disrupt arrival of asylum seekers in Gosport, but Border Force instead transported them to Dover Charities have condemned footage of far-right activist Daniel Thomas using a blade to slash an inflatable dinghy in the Channel while a rescue worker was onboard, in a further escalation of organised anti-immigration protest. Hundreds of protesters gathered in the early evening at Gosport in Hampshire, aiming to disrupt the planned disembarkation of asylum seekers, but the Border Force vessels carrying them landed instead in Dover. If the White House Press Corps does anything but boycott all White House events going forward, it's a spectacular act of institutional cowardice. You don't give a *single inch* to fascists—and that means standing together rather than treating fascism as someone else's problem.

All day Piddington's womminfolk have been telling news how they will be terrified of "hundreds of young men nearby, free to come and go as they please." NOT ONE JOURNALIST has asked: "How did you cope when it was an army base? Who came and went then? Nuns?" Soon as you ask that, all becomes clear.

I just think that risking your life at a moment's notice to save people you've never met in exchange for no money is a better expression of patriotism than dressing up like a Poundshop paramilitary and intimidating families with kids trying to get onto a ferry.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

There's an argument for calling them masked thugs, because that is factually true. There's an argument for calling them pathetic cosplaying loser incels, also true, and laughing at them damages their tough-guy self image and hurts recruitment. There is no argument for calling them protesters.

And as with Jason Arday, you can see the problem here. Because a handful of gatekeepers decide what is ‘news’ & what isn’t. This is a stunning investigation but if & how it catches fire depends on the follow-up…& Times & Telegraph are embarrassed & implicated. So much now depends on the BBC…

If early release can be altered so as to exempt homicide offences, it should be. Prisoners who have caused the gravest harm should be among the last to benefit from the overcrowding crisis. But carving out exceptions for individual prisoners in response to media campaigns is weak and unprincipled.

Astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell was born #OTD in 1943. She discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967. The #Nobel Prize in #Physics for their discovery went to to her thesis supervisor Antony Hewish & to astronomer Martin Ryle. #WomenInSTEM #astrophysics #MatildaEffect
Color portrait of astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who discovered pulsars in 1967. She stands at a three-quarter angle facing left, looking toward the camera with a calm, assured, and slight smile. Her short, textured, wavy gray-brown hair frames a pleasant expression behind delicate gold-framed wire spectacles. She wears a structured, pale gray-blue blazer over a white and dark gray leaf-patterned blouse. The background consists of a soft-focus, desaturated green and white bokeh wash resembling out-of-focus foliage or filtered light, creating a professional and scholarly atmosphere. The cool-toned lighting highlights her face and the crisp lines of her business suit, casting gentle shadows that give the portrait a sense of depth and dignity.

And finally: Balogun himself. Why did he not make a statement and say that he would not play the match? Why did he play at all? The team lost every form of sympathy at the very latest when they failed to show any kind of protest on the pitch either.

And who found it completely okay to even let Balogun play from the start. Then the players, who quite obviously either did not protest internally in the first place, or did not mean their protest seriously, because: Balogun was allowed to play.

Yes; winning elections or becoming Prime Minister is such an obsession, that there’s no plan for what to do once you achieve it. We need to change the way we select and elect leaders, to try to reward those who do have plans and strategy
