Those texts were utterly sickening. I was shocked by them (which probably shows a naivety on my behalf). The series was good though. Kept me guessing.

🚨🚨 @coe.int of Europe said yesterday that the #US formally notified it that it would leave the Group of States against Corruption, or #GRECO. Only two other countries have left GRECO before — #Russia and #Belarus. The fall of the #US on the world scene is striking. apnews.com/article/trum...

Why wouldn't he?

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yes definitely. Higher taxes would ultimately benefit us all. Why isnt this in the manifesto? Pay more and we will ensure that you get more from life. Too many haves versus have nots.

I dont think anyone would argue that reform isnt needed. The situation is dire. Its how its going to be funded that needs careful consideration.

I’d prefer it if social care was funded by taxing billionaires & big business rather than freezing more pensioners.

It does have to be paid for somehow which is why he is stopping triple lock, isnt it? He seems to have said two different things re who doesnt pay..

The two comments seem to be at odds with each other then! I will hold my nose and watch the LK interview (not her biggest fan 😆). There may also be clarity in future interviews now too. I hope he is asked the question directly at some point. Thanks for the response.

It is good for those who are just on state pensions though. As long as it rises enough still to keep them out of poverty.

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yes I agree with you. It is very poor and Im open to improvements but im not sure cutting the rate in which pensions rise and then still charging people for care seems like a good idea. It doesnt feel like many will gain much?

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Thank you. So if you have a workplace pension you will still pay?

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Thank you. Could you explain then please? This is what I am working from: "No care charges for those with just state pension, says Burnham Burnham says that under this new plan, older people with "nothing more than state pension" will not have to pay for care charges." Taken from BBC.

I guess we have to see a bit more detail on where the cut off point is but it doesnt sound great to me 🤷

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
State pension is not generous which was what I was referring to. If only 13% of pensioners have only that, then only 13% will not have to pay extra towards care. The rest will (depending on where cut off is).

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Agreed. Higher taxation for all and better services all round. Denmark seem to be pretty good on that front? However, cutting pension rises to pay for it is not my preferred answer. UK state pension is one of the lowest as it is.

"No care charges paid out of basic state pensions"

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It depends whete the cut off is

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Really? Triple lock gone and the only people mentioned who wont be paying for any care they need, are the ones who are living on a state pension. So less pension and still paying fees for anyone with savings or a work pension. Doesn't sound great to me.

Jo @joaretz1.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
He said that anyone who is living on state pension only, will not pay care fees so presumably if you have any savings or a workplace pension you will carry on paying through the nose and you lose on triple lock.

Newspapers: We're going to have to pay for Burnham's social care plans! Also newspapers: Social care costs took all my savings! We're already paying for social care, just less fairly and probably less efficiently. #R4Today

Far-right activist Daniel Thomas slashes dinghy with blade while rescue worker onboard
Thomas called followers to disrupt arrival of asylum seekers in Gosport, but Border Force instead transported them to Dover Charities have condemned footage of far-right activist Daniel Thomas using a blade to slash an inflatable dinghy in the Channel while a rescue worker was onboard, in a further escalation of organised anti-immigration protest. Hundreds of protesters gathered in the early evening at Gosport in Hampshire, aiming to disrupt the planned disembarkation of asylum seekers, but the Border Force vessels carrying them landed instead in Dover. If the White House Press Corps does anything but boycott all White House events going forward, it's a spectacular act of institutional cowardice. You don't give a *single inch* to fascists—and that means standing together rather than treating fascism as someone else's problem.

All day Piddington's womminfolk have been telling news how they will be terrified of "hundreds of young men nearby, free to come and go as they please." NOT ONE JOURNALIST has asked: "How did you cope when it was an army base? Who came and went then? Nuns?" Soon as you ask that, all becomes clear.

And do you not think people are equally depressed when they cant pay bills or buy a house because they constantly change jobs and start at the bottom again? I wish it wasn't the case but I strongly believe that it is
