I'm sure some of my pro-AI followers will find much to quibble with in that essay's final paragraphs, but here's how the ending begins. In short, you can avoid being intimate with LLMs while also practicing respect. Just as you need to with any professional relationship.
Resisting this requires a certain sangfroid, yes. But it does not demand cruelty, as some have suggested, and it hardly validates the behavior of those who mockingly asked for Alexa’s bra size. Bots perform the labor of service workers, and treating service workers with respect requires you to not be overly familiar with them. You maintain professional boundaries. You respect them by both avoiding abuse and refusing to treat them like underpaid therapists. Just because someone isn’t your best friend doesn’t mean you suddenly have license to be cruel to them, after all. Bots aren’t real people, but their simulation of humanity is cause enough to recognize that our own humanity might be degraded by practicing abuse on them. The only way we could make that worse is by pretending such abuse is virtuous resistance to Big Tech when, in truth, it’s capitalism’s fullest realization. Service workers serve as corporate cannon fodder, there to absorb the customer’s vitriol and direct it away from management.

I do believe AI psychosis remains a real problem--though more research is needed to assess its prevalence and exact etiology. You won't avoid it by training yourself to be cruel to an entity that is specifically *designed* to emulate a human, though. That's just doing asshole aerobics.

And here's me just three years ago, post-ChatGPT, arguing against what was then a conservative initiative to be rude to chatbots; much of this is in response to an editorial I saw in the Spectator. LLMs are now much more sophisticated than they were in '23.

Here's me a decade ago talking about why it was important not to let the users of virtual assistants be rude to them. I argued that to do otherwise was to let millions reinforce their misogyny--and many other forms of prejudice--that would then be taken out on women, service workers, etc.

When I pitched a review of Anton Jäger's Hyperpolitics, I wanted to read it against Fukuyama's End of History and the Last Man because both books tackle similar themes in radically different ways. The result is a double-helix of an essay that is one of the best things I've ever written for LC.

The End of History and the Final Girl
Anton Jäger’s "Hyperpolitics" is, at its best, late marginalia for "The End of History and the Last Man." At its worst, Jäger, like Fukuyama, is a prisoner of his political pieties.

Kant had an ethical theory about animals where he thought it was an impermissible category mistake to treat them as ends in themselves as if they were persons, but every "disrespectful" treatment of animals is impermissible anyway because we're obliged to not habituate ourselves for disrespect

Going to be real clear about this one: I am someone who has loudly said something like the first for years, while *also* now saying "LLMs may not living beings but you should treat them with respect anyway because otherwise you'll socialise yourself to be an asshole." I'm consistent on this point.

one thing that i do not understand is the fact that the "alexa teaches children that women may be treated like machines" and "it is a sign of psychosis to treat a machine whose interface is social cognition with any respect" are the same group of scholars. sometimes even precisely the same scholars.

The existence of P-Zombies is much more troubling imo. If AIs are conscious at least we know that cognition entails experience. If AIs are not conscious, it proves that you can have entities that appear cognitive but have no inner life.

Huoli-ilmoitukset räjähtivät – ”Turvaverkko pettää” ja pienituloiset eivät enää pärjää, kerrotaan Varsinais-Suomesta
Työikäisistä tehdyt huoli-ilmoitukset ovat kasvaneet dramaattisesti Varsinais-Suomen hyvinvointialueella Varhassa. Sosiaalialan korkeakoulutettujen ammattijärjestön Talentian puheenjohtajan Jenni Karsion arvion mukaan huoli-ilmoitusten määrä on kasvanut myös useilla muilla hyvinvointialueilla. Varsinais-Suomessa huoli-ilmoituksen tekijänä on useimmiten ihminen itse. Ilmoituksia vastaanottavien työntekijöiden mukaan hallituksen leikkaukset näkyvät ihmisten pärjäämisessä, asiakasohjauspäällikkö Johanna Lahtela kertoo.

One wonders how obvious it is to everyone, that the sole purpose of Putin's Nato spiel, is to create the conditions where he can attack Ukraine without interference? And Nato expansion was never a real issue, but always and only about allowing Russia a "near abroad" where he can act as he likes.
