And only now remembered this picture of the ~~autocrat~~ president of Finland for 25(!) years, Urho Kekkonen. His ur-hipster drip from 1975 (before it was cool) includes, you guessed it, a (fancy) puukko knife. Dangling just how I remember especially old men carrying theirs in public in the 1980s.
A photograph of Urho Kaleva Kekkonen (1900-1986), the President of Finland from 1956 to 1982, in 1975. Kekkonen is standing up and wearing then fashionable nylon quilted jacket, black hip waders, his trademark huge squarish eyeglasses, a hat, and a puukko knife. He looks very much like a hipster. I’m not sure whether we have to, under any circumstances, hand it to autocrats, but I’ve been under the impression that life during Tito wasn’t entirely horrible... (And here we Finns really can’t be throwing stones after all the autocratic bullshit we happily accepted from This Guy for 25 years)

It’s just that it is shitty reasoning based on deep ignorance of actual difficulties in killing humans. As someone who has spent a considerable amount of the last 26 years at least occasionally thinking about the problem of killing humans, these guys are all just hand waving everything.

Even though I detest the immigrant-hating far right, if any immigrants actually tried to do this to Finland, I would even be obliged to resist it by lethal means.

I really liked Oulanka's Karhunkierros trip! The site below says the top three Finnish national parks for old forest enjoyers are 1. Syöte 2. Hiidenportti 3. Urho Kekkonen's park (tho largely low growth) It has great maps! Blues are >111 years old in 2026. polkujenlumo.com/nain-loydat-...
A map of Finland showing the age of forests in 2023. Almost all is lighter shades of green (46 to 87 years) or pale orange/tan (33-45 years). Forests at least 110 years old (blues) are almost absent in most of the country, with larger concentrations only in northern Lapland around lake Inari. I believe terror tends to be counterproductive to national liberation. However, if foreigners had divided up Finland like Palestine and pushed native Finns into similar “reservations” - the map shows approximate equivalence - I for one would be oath bound to resist with any means necessary.

More experiences from life under right-wing governments: during its term, the most right-wing government in Finnish history has greatly increased the purchasing power of the top earning deciles, while reducing it for the poorest. labore.fi/julkaisu/ost...

"Ludwig Boltzman, who spent much of his life studying statistical mechanics, died in 1906, by his own hand. Paul Ehrenfest, carrying on the work, died similarly in 1933. Now it is our turn to study statistical mechanics. Perhaps it will be wise to approach the subject cautiously"

Built a "toy model" to illustrate a major problem with the "AI will kill all humans" #AIpocalypse brouhaha. Namely: at least for the foreseeable future, a hostile or indifferent #AI that tried to get rid of us puny humans... would also make *itself* extinct. jmkorhonen.github.io/models/kill_...
A graph of system trajectory of "Kill all humans" toy model, exploring what might happen if big bad AI would actually try to kill all humans, or even a significant portion of us.

It shows a jump in autonomous AI-controlled industrial capacity, but human industrial capacity it all is dependent upon drops fast (because the stupid clanker killed us) and what the AI has isn't enough to maintain its own existence. End result: mutual extinction.

A good place as any to advertise one of my favourite books: How to Measure Anything, by D. W. Hubbard. Despite its boring business focus, it's very much worth a read. *Especially* if you are vehemently hostile to the idea! If nothing else, you'll learn much about the enemy.

If we need to import American battlewagons, let’s import proper, safer ones instead
A diagram showing sight lines from the drivers position of various SUVs, pickup trucks - and M1A2 Abrams main battle tank. A five-year old child disappears from the pickup or SUV driver’s view at about 2 meters or more, whereas a driver of Abrams can see the same child until about 1.3 meters away.

We had these for the folks specifically trained as “guerrillas.” Depicts their sleeping quarters. (Still used by recon units.) Finnish Cold War doctrine also fully expected that every unit, even those in the rear echelon, could be isolated and would have to fight an independent guerrilla war.

Individually, probably not. Together, absolutely. Sweden has a pretty good bomb design in the archives already. Defence has never won a war and is not a reliable deterrent against the Kremlins. Capability to incinerate their major cities is. Incidentally: population density of Russia.

"Heard of a cool tech-bro-weeding interview technique the other day. A male and female engineer conduct the interview session together. If, when the female engineer asks the candidate a question, he directs his answer to the male engineer, then he's out. They said it happens a lot"

This weird Harry Potter cult that is hugely influential in OpenAI and Anthropic has believed for decades now that AI ≈ god. The AIpocalypse chatter is basically this but with people who think blogs and “first principles“ thinking are superior to peer reviewed research.
The classic Then a miracle occurs cartoon: a black and white cartoon where two men are standing in front of a blackboard. The blackboard is covered with mathematical equations. In the middle, between two groups of complicated equations, there is written a text "Then a miracle occurs." The older man is pointing to it as the younger man looks from the side; the text at the bottom of the cartoon says "I think you should be more explicit here in step two." There is always an XKCD of course:
An XKCD comic titled “Judgement day.” It shows Earth with missiles rocketing away to space. Speech bubbles emanating from Earth say “Oh my god, why do you even *have* all these? What’s wrong with you? We’re launching them into the sun.”

Caption below the picture says “The moment the computers controlling our nuclear arsenals became sentient.”
