I reviewed Sarah Williams' book on Josephine Butler - one of the most extraordinary women in modern British history, who should be *much* better known. It's "both a biography of a remarkable woman and an argument about how to write the history of Victorian Britain". academic.oup.com/ehr/advance-...
"Josephine Butler (1828–1906) was one of the most famous women of her age. She led an international crusade against sex-trafficking and child abuse. She brought prostitutes out of prison and into her home; challenged governments, police chiefs and judges; and spoke of rape and sexually transmitted disease on public platforms. Over a long career, Butler fought for women’s education, argued for female suffrage, served on the Married Women’s Property Committee and supported Home Rule for Ireland. She wrote numerous books, pamphlets and articles, as well as biographies of her husband, her father and the fourteenth-century mystic St Catherine of Siena. Most famously, she led the victorious campaign against the Contagious Diseases Acts (CDAs), which allowed the detention, medical inspection and imprisonment of women suspected of prostitution without trial. Millicent Garrett Fawcett thought that ‘No other woman in history has had such far-reaching influence’, and the suffrage movement carried her name on its banners. Yet she is largely forgotten today; and when the Fawcett Memorial was erected in 2018, her name was not among the fifty-five pioneers inscribed on its plinth."

Glad someone senior from the sector is pushing back. Labour MPs need to understand the serious real anger from graduates and the people who produce them. And the dangerous financial situation they have allowed to fester, or indeed worsened, in one of Britain’s leading sectors.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

A thread 🧵 on Polish palaeontologists in Harbin There used to be (~30k strong) Polish population in the city of Harbin (哈尔滨), during Russian occupation of North China & partition of Poland. The population was composed of Socialist Poles who were banished as punishment for anti-Tsarist uprisings.

This flag symbolized the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER), a joint Sino-Russian venture established under the 1896 Li–Lobanov Treaty, which granted Russia a concession to build a railway through Manchuria. Adopted in 1897, it served as the official emblem for the Russian-managed company, displaying its authority at railway stations and facilities like those in Harbin. Had our first graduate thesis defense of the academic year here at Duke - for Yueqi Chen's absolutely lyrical ethnography on nurses' aides working in public hospitals in Hunan, China. Sharing, with permission, a beautiful passage from Yueqi's thesis which I found really moving: #everynightapoem
Stories are there, but they float, and only when one begins to listen, ask, and pay attention do they land. In an era governed by the tyranny of speed, stories are always afloat because few actually care about others’ stories, and the excuse is that they don’t have time. We are governed by speed because we allow speed to govern us. The cab driver’s father-in-law’s frostbites, just like nursing assistants’ body aches, are inconsequential for us and this world but are significant for them. They embody not only the pain of their bodies but the pain of this era. Their bodies become where pain clings to so that fewer others will need to experience pain. I’d like to invite my readers to slow down, even just a little bit, and to care for others’ stories, especially the bodily ones.
Ethnography has an unforgiving quality to it because when you see people in the field, you can’t unsee them; when you hear someone’s stories, you can’t unhear them. Ethnography can never be tidy because it’s so close to an ever-messy, changing, and vibrant being that is life. To try to smooth out the ethnography is equivalent to leaving out the “unpretty” people and corners. I slowed down when faced with such “unprettiness” – I dwelled on it. This is my ethnographic responsibility – to not speed up when coming across the unprettiness but to stare right at it long and hard.

from Yueqi Alex Cheng, "Reinventing Care: Nursing Assistants’ Embodied Resistance Working in Public Hospitals in Changsha, Hunan" for Graduate Liberal Studies at Duke University, December 2025.Two committee members, Anne Whisnant and Eileen Chow, and a third, Ralph Litzinger, off camera, plus the new MA herself, Yueqi Cheng
