I just had a conversation with a stranger on a train (very nice!) and realized I kind of filter who I talk to in situations like that, since I don’t want to have the “what do you do for work?” “Oh I’m a professor working on climate” conversation turn into an argument

Thom Yorke is the antidote to climate week induced psychosis
Album cover for Wall of Eyes by The Smile. It’s a weird looking pointy looking sparse forest with very sharp pine trees and the sky is orange with some weird blue wavy bits. And there are of course some eyes in the sky too because why not Thom Yorke can do what he wants. Song title is Under Our Pillows

Even if we are able to capture all CO₂ emitted at point sources with CCS and scale atmospheric CO₂ removal (CDR) to billions of tonnes per year (we can't and never will), continuing to burn fossil fuels means that millions of people will continue to die from air pollution each year.

Hey look! It's another example of minimum viable scale in fossil infrastructure! Our fossil fueled world isn't built to shrink - it's going to take a lot of advance planning and a lot of investment to keep these systems safe and reliable as we transition off of them. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Well this is startling. Researchers looked at how AI may raise productivity in the energy sector. Across the board, productivity increases for fossil fuels cause a net increase in GHGs. The only way AI causes net GHGs to fall is if renewables productivity goes up 4-5x more than fossil fuels.

I haven't considered the LCA for building or operating the plant, or the fact that Occidental will use the captured CO₂ to extract more oil from the ground. But none of this matters because direct air capture today isn't meant to capture CO₂ at scale, but to capture 45Q tax credits.

Irony is dead
An event flyer for London Climate Action Week, titled "Extreme heat: Improving governance and strengthening action around the world," features a background photograph of a dry, arid landscape with a road and mountains under a hazy blue sky. At the top, logos for the "Climate Resilience Alliance" and "London Climate Action Week" are visible next to a red "EVENT" tag, while the bottom of the flyer lists the event details—scheduled for 24 June from 09:30-12:00 BST at the Shaw Library, London School of Economics and online—alongside partner logos including LSE Grantham Research Institute, IFRC, Mercy Corps, and Practical Action. Stamped boldly across the center of the image in large, dark red, capitalized letters is the ironic overlay text: "CANCELLED DUE TO EXTREME HEAT."
