“What a beautiful universe, hon" says a telescope as gazes upon an aurora borealis. “It really is”, responds the telescope's partner, who it turns out is not a telescope, but a microscope. Hands full of algae, she wades waist deep in a disgusting swamp, amazed by the heavenly microscopic life all around them.

Eggs released in the environment are at risk from many threats. @jillianlewis.bsky.social & @spencernyholm.bsky.social explore how #plastid -derived #carotenoid crystals benefit larval survival & trans-oceanic dispersal in #SeaUrchin eggs 🧪 Paper: plos.io/4mOAxZh Primer: plos.io/4cPpBGr
Transmission and benefits of plastid-derived structures in sea urchin eggs. Top: Proposed mechanism of transmission of plastid-derived structures. From left to right: Adult female sea urchin ingests diatoms and releases eggs that contain carotenoid-like crystals. These carotenoid crystals may be enzymatically cleaved into apocarotenoids (i.e., phytohormones). Bottom left: Eggs of Arbacia lixula reared in light (receiving benefits from carotenoids) had higher hatching and survival rates, increased fatty acid metabolism, and an enrichment of apocarotenoids compared to those reared in the dark. Bottom right: Larvae receiving benefits from carotenoids were modeled to disperse along the African shelf in fewer generations and predicted to survive trans-oceanic dispersal.

Four postcards featuring an animal and a fact. A bumblebee card which says "Bumblebees are capable of creating specialized buzzing vibrations that dislodge pollen from the flowers of crops such as tomatoes and blueberries, making them important food pollinators. A red-spotted purple butterfly card that says "A highly territorial butterfly found at the forests' edges. Their bright colors mimic the poisonous pipevine swallowtail, to deceie potential predtors. A hummingbird clearwing moth that says "A migratory moth found commonly from Ontario to Texas. Look for these hummingbird momics in second-growth forests or cultivated gardens on purple and pink flowers". and a white-lined sphinx moth card that says " A large hawk moth found in abundance throughout Central and north America. They pollinate a wide variety of flowers, but can cause major crop damage in large swarms"
