Development in the sea is tough and can end in starvation. @tylerjcarrier.bsky.social @utehentschel.bsky.social &co show that #SeaUrchin eggs contain a #plastid -derived structure whose light-dependent activity influences metabolism, #development & survival @plosbiology.org 🧪 plos.io/4mOAxZh
Top: Micrographs of unfertilized eggs from the sea urchin Arbacia lixula without (top panels) and with (bottom panels) cytoplasmic autofluorescent particles. These particles were most consistent for the presence of carotenoids, as shown using (left) transmitted light and (right) fluorescence at an excitation of 561 nm. The light micrograph is a single optical slice, while the florescence micrograph is a maximum projection Z-stack. Bottom: These autofluorescent structures correspond with large crystals (CC) observed in transmission electron micrographs. Mitochondria (Mt) and yolk platelets (YP) are also noted. The combined fluorescence signature and cellular structure implies that these crystal structures are chromoplast-derived carotenoid crystals.

Eggs released in the environment are at risk from many threats. @jillianlewis.bsky.social & @spencernyholm.bsky.social explore how #plastid -derived #carotenoid crystals benefit larval survival & trans-oceanic dispersal in #SeaUrchin eggs 🧪 Paper: plos.io/4mOAxZh Primer: plos.io/4cPpBGr
Transmission and benefits of plastid-derived structures in sea urchin eggs. Top: Proposed mechanism of transmission of plastid-derived structures. From left to right: Adult female sea urchin ingests diatoms and releases eggs that contain carotenoid-like crystals. These carotenoid crystals may be enzymatically cleaved into apocarotenoids (i.e., phytohormones). Bottom left: Eggs of Arbacia lixula reared in light (receiving benefits from carotenoids) had higher hatching and survival rates, increased fatty acid metabolism, and an enrichment of apocarotenoids compared to those reared in the dark. Bottom right: Larvae receiving benefits from carotenoids were modeled to disperse along the African shelf in fewer generations and predicted to survive trans-oceanic dispersal.

I am appalled by the ASM's decision to remove DEI content from their website. Here is my email to the American Society for Microbiology, @ASM.org asking them to put everything back as it was. If you are an ASM member, please consider writing them.
Subject: Appalled by the decision to remove DEI content on the ASM website

Dear ASM Leadership,

For over 20 years, I have been a proud member of the ASM, a professional society that not only publishes outstanding microbiology research but also supports diversity, equity, and inclusion within our field.

I am deeply disappointed and angered by ASM’s recent decision to remove online content that highlighted and celebrated non-white, female, and LGBTQ+ scientists. Rather than unquestioningly complying with vague governmental directives to halt and delete inclusion efforts, ASM should have taken a principled stand and kept this content accessible.

Since ASM is not a federal agency and derives most of its funding from publishing and membership fees, this decision to remove content that so many of us support is both disheartening and perplexing.

I have read ASM’s statement following the recent STAT article, which claims that no content was deleted but is instead "under review." I must ask: under review for what purpose? Will the language be altered? Will key aspects be removed?

I urge ASM to demonstrate integrity and restore the content in its original form.

As BlueSky user Len Kurland worded it nicely, this is the perfect time for Microbial Resistance.

Kind regards,

Elisabeth Bik
