Pedestrians are more likely to be killed by heavier cars – and even more so if the vehicle is taller, Australian-first research has found.

I think familiarity with survey research from half a century or more ago makes me a bit more sceptical of the stronger doomer claims of this kind. Functional literacy and numeracy, basic knowledge about core aspects of history, politics etc were not so widespread in the past either!

Always interesting to read studies on compulsory voting in Belgium, which everyone seems to hate and it contrasts with compulsion in Australia where you can find almost no one who seriously thinks we should drop it. Arguments for equitable voice and democratic legitimacy are commonly cited.

The recent stouch on the selection of Simon Steward via the Samuel Griffith society are a case in point. Steward was known to be very right wing (for a judge) before he was appointed by the Morrison government. Our dataset has him as far to the right as any other judge in our span from 1995-2021.

Banning organisations has a sorry history – does Australia really want to go down this road again? | Anne Twomey
As the government brings its new hate laws to parliament, it’s worth remembering past attempts suggest legislation used to outlaw political groups have been neither wise nor necessary Australia’s history of banning political groups gives pause for thought as to whether we really want to go down this route again. During the first world war, the Unlawful Associations Act 1916 was enacted and used to ban a group called Industrial Workers of the World. Membership was made a criminal offence. Members could also be deported if they were not British subjects born in Australia. Anne Twomey is a Professor emerita in constitutional law at the University of Sydney Continue reading...

NEW WORKING PAPER: I've been working on something called "Electoral districts as samples from the national population". You can find it here: www.chrishanretty.co.uk/20251217-dis... (1/n)
Title: "Electoral districts as samples from the national population"

Abstract: The relationship between national and district-level electoral is a foundational topic in the study of elections. I argue that selected district-level electoral outcomes can be modelled as though they were the outcome of a process involving random sampling without replacement. For seat-level outcomes, district magnitude is analogous to sample size. For vote-level outcomes, I argue that the role of sample size is played by a pseudo-magnitude, or district magnitude plus a constant. My theory gives point predictions and variances for the effective and 'raw' numbers of seat-winning parties, and the effective number of vote-winning parties. I estimate linear and nonlinear Bayesian regressions to test this theory using CLEA data. The principal coefficients in these regressions are within one to three percent of their predicted values; predictions from this theory are between 2% and 45% more accurate than predictions from the leading account of district-level electoral outcomes.

Two months ago, I wrote a paper for the Electoral Matters Committee. It clocked in at 23,000 words with 16 data tables, 11 graphs, 204 footnotes and 30,000 datapoints. I made the case that we should take advantage of this historic juncture to expand participation in our representative democracy.
GREEN SHOOTS FOR THE GRASSROOTS
MAINTAINING TRUST IN OUR DEMOCRACY BY
RESTORING PARTICIPATION IN DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS
This paper proposes interconnected reforms that aim to rebuild trust in Australia’s democratic institutions — our Parliament, our political parties and the ecosystem of creative conflict they drive. These institutions are a great strength in our system and shouldn’t be circumvented, dismissed or ignored by policymakers.
For decades, Australia was the world’s laboratory for democratic reforms. We led the way on the secret ballot, women’s suffrage (for some at least), a living wage for MPs, compulsory and preferential voting and more. But since the turn of the millennium, we’ve stalled out.
For too many people, our democracy isn’t working — not the way it should and not the way we say it does. While better than many other countries, our system still leaves people feeling like their voice isn’t being heard or their vote doesn’t count. This term, we can fix that.
