On 11 Nov. 2020, APOD published this spectacular image. It is a spiral mosaic of 48 full moons, collected over 10 years from northern to southern Italy. No trick: it is the Moon, filtered by Earth’s atmosphere. Credit: Marcella Giulia Pace apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap20111... 🔭⚛️🧪 #astrophotography
Forty-eight full-Moon photos. Black background. They form a spiral, and the rings get tighter toward the middle. Some appear gray, some brownish gray. Others appear yellow, orange or deep red. A few pale blues. One vivid purple Moon sits near the center.
Several disks low in the arrangement look slightly flattened rather than round. The sequence ends with a faint red Moon from the total lunar eclipse of 27 July 2018.
Small credit text at the bottom reads Marcella Giulia Pace.

Think you know Jupiter? In ultraviolet light, it can look like almost another planet. Dark poles, a dark Great Red Spot, one bright oval that fades. #Hubble reveals clouds and hazes the eye cannot see. 📷NASA, ESA, Hubble, Judy Schmidt apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap18101... 🧪🔭⚛️ #planetsci #astronomy
Jupiter sits big and round against black. This is near-ultraviolet, false color.
Bands run across the disk in cyan, pink and muted brown instead of the usual cream and orange. The poles look darker brown with slightly pinkish clues. On the left side of the planet a large storm, the Great Red Spot, is also dark rather than red. Just to its right a smaller oval that would look white in visible light is similarly dark. Farther right a chain of storms, the String of Pearls, stands out bright pink.A small round disk at upper left, off the planet’s limb, is Ganymede.

This is a SMALL version of the largest JWST image released so far—of IC 348, a star-forming region about 1,000 lightyears away. Open up the image and marvel in the incredible beauty even in our galactic neighbourhood. This is what it looks like when stars are born.
From the source: "A star-forming region. It is blanketed in thick clouds of gas and dust, millions of kilometres across, that form swirling patterns. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the centre of the scene. Each is crowned with six long points created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors. In the upper right, a couple of hidden stars blast out long, glowing jets of material."

This is a stunning lunar corona, visible in Death Valley. A corona is an optical phenomenon you may see when thin clouds partially veil the Sun or the Moon. Photo: Arpan Das Source: epod.usra.edu/blog/2021/08... 🔭🧪⚛️ #sciart #science #optics
A night landscape in Death Valley. In the foreground the playa is dry and cracked. The ground is broken into blue-grey plates of mud or salt, divided by dark fissures. Near the bottom center one crack forms a wide, almost round shape, like a plate that has split. Some of those surfaces pick up a faint gloss from the moonlight.A dark mountain range sits farther back, low and uneven against the sky. The Moon is high and very bright. The disk is overexposed, almost a white glare. A lunar corona surrounds it. First comes a bright aureole. Outside that the colour changes. Near the Moon it is bluish-white. Then green. Then yellow. At the edge there is a faint pink-violet rim. The rings stay soft and run into one another.
Thin, streaky clouds drift across the sky, partly veiling the Moon and helping form the corona. The night sky offers a magical view. The whole scene is cast in cool blue tones, quiet and wide.

NASA's MESSENGER Finds New Evidence for Water Ice at Mercury's Poles - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/dxkgAE
New observations by the MESSENGER spacecraft provide compelling support for the long-held hypothesis that Mercury harbors abundant water ice and other frozen volatile materials in its permanently shadowed polar craters.

Three independent lines of evidence support this conclusion: the first measurements of excess hydrogen at Mercury's north pole with MESSENGER's Neutron Spectrometer, the first measurements of the reflectance of Mercury's polar deposits at near-infrared wavelengths with the Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA), and the first detailed models of the surface and near-surface temperatures of Mercury's north polar regions that utilize the actual topography of Mercury's surface measured by the MLA. These findings are presented in three papers published online today in Science Express.

Given its proximity to the Sun, Mercury would seem to be an unlikely place to find ice. But the tilt of Mercury's rotational axis is almost zero — less than one degree — so there are pockets at the planet's poles that never see sunlight. Scientists suggested decades ago that there might be water ice and other frozen volatiles trapped at Mercury's poles.

The idea received a boost in 1991, when the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico detected unusually radar-bright patches at Mercury's poles, spots that reflected radio waves in the way one would expect if there were water ice. Many of these patches corresponded to the location of large impact craters mapped by the Mariner 10 spacecra...
