🔭 The Complete Sharpless Catalog: 313 Nebulas Credit: Bing Xin ap261002
313 separate images of nebulae that resemble a variety of shapes and brightnesses. Some are dim and whispy, others are bright and create structure. Each image traces the complex behavior of interstellar gas.

NEPTUNE Opposition 2026 By Brian Martin www.facebook.com/groups/plane...
Description by Brian Martin:
"Every year around opposition I always set out to revisit the furthest planet in our solar system. Unlike Uranus, this one is tougher and barely has detail. You can normally just see contrasts of clouds. For this event, we had excellent seeing. I used an IR PASS 685 Filter mostly and then shot some color frames as well and blended it all together. This is an hour's worth of Neptune and I immediately notice in all stacks a very bright cloud center top left of the planet which is tracking along the equator. There are other areas of interest. Triton was in the picture but I couldn't save it when resizing and zooming in on the planet. The orientation of Neptune here is tilted just how I captured it."

The large coronal hole currently visible on the Sun is rotating away, but the fast solar wind should reach Earth in the next 24-48 hours. NOAA SWPC have issued a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm watch for Oct 4. The watch for Oct 2 (today) is for a possible minor CME impact.

A crash course on planet-shattering collisions, from Webb 🌏💥 A Mars-sized world called Theia once smashed into Earth, leading to the creation of our Moon. Now, Webb has examined a class of young stellar systems that show signs of similar upheavals 👉 esawebb.org/news/weic2618/ 🔭 🧪
Artist’s concept of a star and its debris disc against the black background of space. The star is in the background, right of center, and depicted as a small, luminous sphere. The debris disc is a large blue ring that encircles the star. The debris disc is angled toward the viewer, so that the portion nearest to the viewer extends beyond the bottom frame of the illustration. Many dark, rocky fragments are scattered throughout the debris disc. In the foreground, toward the left, is a small planetary embryo colliding into the left side of a larger spherical object. The impact site glows bright yellow and orange and has a mottled appearance, as though chunks of both colliding bodies are breaking up and being destroyed. Orange-yellow streams of vapor extend outward from the collision area. Behind the debris disc and its star are many small stars in the background. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, J. Olmsted (STScI)

I have added coastlines and also plotted key space weather data during the interval. The auroral oval was slightly expanded, and Earth was feeling the influence of some fast solar wind. There was a minor geomagnetic storm also occurring.

From Hubble esahubble.org/images/potw1...
Galaxy clusters are some of the most massive structures that can be found in the Universe — large groups of galaxies bound together by gravity. This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope reveals one of these clusters, known as MACS J0454.1-0300. Each of the bright spots seen here is a galaxy, and each is home to many millions, or even billions, of stars.

Astronomers have determined the mass of MACS J0454.1-0300 to be around 180 trillion times the mass of the Sun. Clusters like this are so massive that their gravity can even change the behaviour of space around them, bending the path of light as it travels through them, sometimes amplifying it and acting like a cosmic magnifying glass. Thanks to this effect, it is possible to see objects that are so far away from us that they would otherwise be too faint to be detected.
