☀️ Sept 29: the Sun is in Virgo and almost blank today. Just one small spot pair, each speck roughly Earth-sized. ⛔️ Never look at the Sun without a certified solar filter. Eye damage is permanent. 📷 Handheld, Sony A7RV, 70-200mm f/4 + 2x TC, Baader AstroSolar™ #solarphotography
Full disk of the Sun in white light, grey on a black background, slightly darker toward the edge. A single small pair of dark sunspots sits in the upper right quadrant, about halfway between the center and the edge. The rest of the surface is clear.

🌝 The Moon on the line, tonight. 1 night short of full, it came up almost due east and got caught on the cable above the roof. Tomorrow it's the #HarvestMoon. Right now it rises only about a quarter of an hour later each evening, so for a few nights there's moonlight right after sunset.

🌌 The California #nebulae (NGC 1499) in the constellation Perseus is glowing about 1,000 light-years from Earth and stretching nearly 100 light-years across. Its deep red light comes from ionized hydrogen, excited by the nearby hot star Xi Persei, which floods the nebula with ultraviolet radiation.
