Mind Control in Carnaby Street
What would you do if you could experience “ecstasy with no consequence”? It’s a possibility explored with great style in Michael Reeves’ 1967 film, The Sorcerers, as JENNIFER WALLIS explores.

This is my dormiphone, a device that its manufacturers claimed would allow you to learn a language in your sleep (it doesn't). It was also used in literal CIA-funded mind control experiments. I hope my students appreciate my new toy.

My monograph “Only a Scratch”: British Military Surgery and the Romance of Pain, 1750–1914" has gone into production with Cambridge University Press. It looks at the cult of heroic fortitude in surgery and at the related racial theories about what sort of person could "take it."

Am teaching a course on Pain & the humanities this yr, and I can't stop thinking about this 1950 experiment conducted in New York hospitals and Cornell University hospital, where physicians burned the hands of women in labor (IN LABOR) to create a measure for pain/study pain thresholds. #histmed

Peacock-shaped Hand Washing Device: Illustration from The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices (Automata) of Inb al-Razza al-Jazari clevelandart.org/art/1945.383.a
The Arabic title of this work is Kitab fi ma'rifat al-hiyal al handasiyya (The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices). According to the description of the device illustrated here, the peacock is filled with water: as it flows into the vessel below, it raises a float that opens a door in the section above, causing the little figure to move forward offering soap; as more water flows, a second door will open and another figure will move forward offering a towel. Finally, the dirty water is drawn off by means of a spigot.

This is the first known asylum patient art ever printed. It is by Bedlam inmate James Matthews. It shows the range of his delusions - he feared a machine which was powered by the ‘effluvia of dogs’ and which attacked him using ‘lobster-cracking’ and ‘thigh-talking’
Black and white illustration. At the centre of the image is a large device, known by Matthews as an 'air loom'. It looks like a huge (perhaps 5 metres wide, 10 metres deep and 2 metres high) chest of drawers. It has pipes coming out of it and a man sits in front of it, pulling two giant levers.

There are nine wooden barrels attached to the pipe with tubes. There are also 3 people who are connected to the loom by rays - they are being mesmerised by the rays it is emitting.
