The Stop The Settlements Act would "prohibit anyone from importing any goods produced, wholly or in part, in any Israeli settlements or outposts in the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) or Gaza" like the UK's recently announced ban. It would also impose a comprehensive sanctions regime.

What the Bill Would Do:
Sanctions:
• The Stop the Settlements Act requires the President to sanction any foreign entity or individual that:
o Is responsible for, complicit in, or directly or indirectly engaged or attempted to engage in the
establishment of new Israeli settlements or outposts in the West Bank or Gaza on or after Sep 30,
2026
o Invests in or constructs infrastructure designed to facilitate the establishment of new Israeli
settlements or outposts or expand existing Israeli settlements or outposts
o Constructs or develops settlements in the area known as “E1,” a project that would cut the West
Bank in two and isolate East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank
o Facilitates the transfer of Israeli civilian population into Israeli settlements or outposts on or after
September 30, 2026
o Is a leader or official of any entity, including government entities, that has engaged in these
actions or of any entities sanctioned under this act.
• The bill would also allow for sanctions on any foreign entity or individual that:
o Participates in activities related to financing, planning, construction, expansion, or maintenance
of existing Israeli settlements or outposts that the President determines undermines the viability
of a future Palestinian state
o Assists, supports, or is owned or controlled by a sanctioned entity
• The sanctions to be imposed include revocation of visas, prohibitions on issuance of new visas, and the
blocking of a sanctioned entity’s assets that are in the jurisdiction of the United States.
• The bill includes the ability to waive sanctions for 12 months (renewable once), with reports to
Congress, and exemptions for humanitarian activities, in support of treaty obligations, and national
security activities.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...

But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

J'adore le tableau de Wright décrivant la découverte du phosphore par Hennig Brand. On voit le scientifique dans une pose solennelle devant sa découverte prométhéenne, alors qu'en vrai Brand a dû patiemment faire réduire 5700 litres de pisse (soit 1.7 Laurent Nuñez) pour isoler le phosphore

La peinture montre l'alchimiste essayant de produire l'insaisissable pierre philosophale, pierre qui pourrait transformer le métal ordinaire en or, mais, à sa grande surprise, découvrant le phosphore. D'après l'arrière-plan, Wright ne situe pas son personnage au XVIIe siècle, mais dans une pièce de style médiéval, munie d'arcs gothiques et de hautes fenêtres pointues, rappelant l'architecture des églises. The co-pilot seems to have tried to crash it into the ground with a full cabin of (mostly Israeli) civilians. Was stopped by his pilot that got stabbed in the process passengers interfered and another crew on the flight landed it in Saudi Arabia. Israel’s treating it as a terror attack for now.

Update. Copilot was Omani and he stabbed the pilot and then tried to crash the plane. Passengers intervened, saved the pilot, tied up the copilot and then someone landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia. No confirmation of pilot’s nationality.
