Flexposts aren't protection. They're analog long-term data collection indicating drivers don't stay in their lane.

#KidicalMassHfx And to the twit who got mad that we were “bringing the kids into [our] agenda,” behold, the kids’ agenda:
An elementary-age girl is riding her bike in the centre of the lane, with her left fist proudly and powerfully raised over her head. She is wearing a black tutu, teal helmet, and probably high heels. A stuffed penguin is in a doll seat on the back of her bike. She is plainly thrilled.

Trolled by a friend this weekend. His old Prius C died and he’s getting a new car. Told me on the phone his partner wanted a bigger vehicle for safety and for when they have family visit. Went on to tell me he got an EV9 (it’s big). Of course I got all worked up. Damn that guy knows me too well.

There’s a quiet culture change happening in Halifax. I think it’s most obvious at #KidicalMassHfx, where you can see “all the cool bikes,” but it’s also evident on an average Sunday afternoon at the pool. The culture of family cycling and cargo bikes is growing steadily and it’s wonderful to see!

The cost of bike infrastructure has been debated by Halifax Council, but when lives are being lost on our roads, @sflkirk.bsky.social wonders about that cost. “There’s a narrative around, ‘Well, we can’t afford those things,’ but can we afford to kill people all the time on our roads?”

Kids' bikes are a fantastic laddered approach to learning bike maintenance. First there's a balance bike that has wheels. Then a balance bike with a hand brake. Then a bike with pedals and a chain. Then a bike with rear gears. Everything is smaller, lighter, easier to manipulate than an adult bike

#KidicalMassHfx isn’t about *me*, but biking with 150 friends and strangers on the street where I grew up makes me reflective. It’s where I struggled to learn to ride without training wheels & didn’t have friends to ride with. I couldn’t imagine this life where bikes connect me so deeply to others.

Flexiposts. To prevent drivers from damaging their vehicles. Flexiposts are not a safety feature.
A parking lot abuts a raised sidewalk. Black flexiposts are installed at the end of every parking space, apparently to prevent drivers from scraping their vehicles on the sidewalk

Right now there are 0.41 registered vehicles for every resident of HRM. Any policy that forces more car dependency takes us towards the provincial number of 0.67 vehicles per person. That’s a potential of adding up to 135,000 more vehicles to our roads. Sound like a good idea, Parker?
