this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

Me after about 10 minutes of panicking: Maybe the 400 word story is 100 not words too long and the 300 word story is not 100 words too short; maybe it's that they are in the wrong blocks.

Here, and elsewhere, people talk about “efficiency” when what they really mean is “efficacy”. People want government that works, that can deliver desired results, and that’s absolutely possible with the right people in charge.

The total property tax revenue out of Bayers Lake is ~$24.6m/year on roughly 860 acres of developed land. If it had the same revenue per acre profile as Downtown ($38.5m/year on ~110 acres), it would generate approximately $300m in taxes per year, or roughly a quarter of all current revenue.
A bar chart showing revenue per developed acre in major employment areas in Halifax. Downtown pulls away from the major suburban commercial areas.

If this area of land had the density of Barrington or Spring Garden that'd be like an whole extra annual city budget's worth of revenue which would result in a HUGE drop in the tax rate. But, we'd rather pay for parking as long as it's disguised as property taxes

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

William Morris lecturing to art students, 1882 www.marxists.org/archive/morr...
I don't want to find fault anywhere if I can help it, but you must pardon me for saying that if our law-makers and law-administrators, our practical common sense men of business, who can be trusted worked half as hard, and single-heartedly as our real artists do - why England would be quite a decent place to live in.Two courses lie open to us; the first to sit down deedless, and pretend that we believe all is well and better, to let our material prosperity drag us into deeds of injustice at home and abroad: to destroy the prosperity both material and spiritual of far-off countries in the name of civilization, while at home we weakly try to palliate with our left hand the miseries we have recklessly raised with our right: to sit still and feign content, though we know that for all men day by day is less and less leisure, more and more wearisome work unworthy of men; to gather if we be rich some share of material prosperity to us, making an island in the sea of squalor, and hoping at least that we shall be eaten last or one of the last.
That is the one course open to us when we know that we have become the slaves of the tyrant we have made for ourselves: and the other what is that? Daily and hourly resistance to our tyrant. Ceaseless plotting of rebellion against him, till one day it breaks out openly and reduces him to his old condition of servant again: a heavy task you may say, even those of you who have your eyes open, and know the monster which we have misnamed commerce for what he is.
