Canada is not actually 'battling for survival' in the context of secession, because in both Alberta and Quebec secession has relatively small amounts of public support. What we're battling is dipshit far-right populist politicians enabling/pushing for this destructive bullshit.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

A bunch of bikes parked outside a low wood building. The bikes and surrounding area are all wet because it’s raining and the roof of the building doesn’t cover the bikes. An adolescent European Starling is perched on one of the bikes. Seen from behind, a woman is rolling in an electric wheelchair on a path next to shrubbery. An old, pretty, red brick building is in the background.

Rank and file Republicans are turning against LGBT acceptance and GOP politicians are leaning into bigotry in both rhetoric and policy. But it is you, the progressive queer or ally, who needs to open your mind and consider other people's feelings. news.gallup.com/poll/710810/...
Most of the recent changes in LGBTQ+ attitudes have occurred among Republicans. For example, in 2021 and 2022, 55% of Republicans said they favored legal same-sex marriage, but today, the figure is 37%. Among independents, support has dropped six points, to 67%, while Democrats’ views are the same as in 2022 (87% in favor).

I call this “People shouldn’t have to be locals to know if they’re driving in a bike lane,” or perhaps “Signage and paint aren’t very effective.” This afternoon, Vernon & Quinpool, Halifax, NS.
View from the handlebars of a frontloader cargo bike on a sunny afternoon. The road ahead is split into three lanes: left-turning, right-turning, and a narrower lane in the middle marked with a fading bike stencil and a forward arrow. Signs in the intersection indicate only bikes are allowed to go straight ahead. A silver sedan with Ontario plates is waiting at the red light in the middle lane (bike lane.)
