people love to talk about reformed rapists the same way they love to talk about reformed nazis, as a sort of mental exercise of quasi-christian (or explicitly christian) redemption back into an innocent state of grace/tabula rasa, which is wild because that is demonstrably impossible.

It’s so funny to imagine what the UK could be like if it took seriously any of its cultural icons—that aren’t wizards, Shakespeare, or in possession of good fortune but in want of a wife. We could have Tyranid statues at Heathrow. Perhaps a grisly frieze depicting Servitor conversion at Gatwick.

Hi everyone, as you saw already, I departed the Pride Caucus. (After only six to seven days in it sadly.) My friend Arienne Childrey, now follows me in departing. She has officially resigned and left the cacus as well. If anyone wants to poke the bigger accounts, please do.

Today, I resigned as Vice Chair of the ODP Pride Caucus. The state party expects us to be a sales team, censoring our voices when we beg candidates not to trade on trans lives. I am still a Democrat, but I will not value party approval over true, defiant advocacy. Full text below. 👇
Part 1 of an open letter of resignation by Arienne Childrey, stepping down as Vice Chair and member of the Ohio Democratic Party (ODP) Pride Caucus. She states that party leadership treats the caucus as a recruitment and sales team rather than a representative body. She cites an incident where the ODP censored and denied permission for the caucus to post a letter by two trans leaders addressing harmful comments made by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton. The State Party Chair reportedly called the letter an "unwelcome distraction," which Childrey notes demonstrates how little party leadership values the voices and dignity of LGBTQ+ Democrats.
Since that decision, every Caucus plan, every potential post, and every path forward has been filtered through a lens of strict compliance and ODP approval. That may very well be the party's rule, but following those rules right now is a dereliction of our duty to the LGBTQ+ community.

For me, any rule that silences advocacy for the trans community during this time is an unjust rule, and I see no obligation to follow it. In alignment with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his Letter from Birmingham Jail:

“One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”

We are living in incredibly dangerous times for the trans community. We are in an era where the GOP has so thoroughly weaponized trans lives that even some formerly self-professing allies within our own party have fallen prey to the rhetoric. Looking at the national trend towards Democratic anti-trans triangulation, as well as our own internal conversations, it is clear to me that this shift is much more than a simple coincidence.

We have to speak up—loudly, strongly, and unapologetically—or I fear what our 2028 choices may look like. The ODP would like everyone to believe they are a "big tent" party. However, their successful efforts to silence even the Pride Caucus—even in cases where we are simply begging our candidates not to trade on our lives for perceived electoral advantage—has proven otherwise. The tent hasn't gotten any bigger; it has simply shifted, leaving many trans individuals, progressives, and allies out in the rain.

I will continue to advocate, organize, and fight for our community with everything I have. But I can no longer compromise my own moral principles by remaining part of a caucus that appears more interested in party approval than in true, defiant advocacy.

Sincerely,
Arienne Childrey

Like, I just see people yelling about shit like "this is a free speech issue"; and anything that might complicate that is immediately dismissed. Like, who taught you that? When? Why is it like that? Why does it seem to only benefit the powerful? Is your defensiveness maybe the point of doing that?

jessdee.bsky.social @jessdee.bsky.social · 22h
Like... Maybe your conception of freedom of speech that centers consumerism and allowing fascist foot soldiers to say anything was somehow influenced by all those billionaires that have benefited from that your entire life. Is that not plausible to you all? Or do you believe "it's the way it is"?

Like, the people that are doing all this shit right now, that have been killing the planet for decades; maybe those people also took liberties with how free speech functions, how freedom of the press functions, how socialism and communism and enterprise and the markets function. No? Is that crazy?

To a certain extent, it's depressing. It's been depressing to see how much people don't want to give up Harry Potter itself in solidarity. How do you build any solidarity when people won't even give up some niche porn trend around Harry Potter in order to stand in solidarity. Real pathetic, tbh.

There is no action that can end the War on Drugs bc there has never been one, only a War on People. And ofc a war for market control, like most wars. It’s also why neither legalization or even decriminalization is federal. Bc it would severely hamper the state’s precedent to violate people’s rights
