For fans of #wayfarers and her other works—do you know if she ever talks about neurodiversity in an interview?

Jes Battis @jesbattis.bsky.social · 2h
It feels like Becky Chambers writes her Wayfarers books from a neurodiverse POV, including characters on the AuDHD spectrum, and a kind of neurodiverse structure of connected vignettes and bottom-up detail processing, but I can’t find an interview where she discusses neurodiversity in the series.

I think if you work in tech and developing this is your job you should know that what I think you should do to yourself I can't say on Bluesky. If you do this, entrapping vulnerable people, you are scum. You are causing deliberate harm for shareholder value and I think you are worthless.

Children of Calliope - Uncanny Magazine
By the early days of the twenty-first century, advocates of book bans had managed, however accidentally, to elevate their hobby to the level of near-religion, and with it created a class of concepts that could only be called into existence if a person read them in a book. By controlling what children could read outside […]

Today's word is TREAT. Today's #BookQW is from Direct Descendant (DAW Books 2025) a contemporary fantasy taking place just west of Timmins, ON, where small town values are subject to variable definitions but all the dogs are still good dogs. Available in pb, audio, & digital. Shop indie if you can.
Lower left the cover of Direct Descendant, yellow and green and black with a bakery, a woman eating a cup cake, framing silver birch, and tentacles. Because it's always better with tentacles.

They tolerated the bloodlines and Daffodil had a somewhat- threatening version of begging for treats. Dexter had come embarrassingly close to eating a train engineer who'd strayed a little too far from the station. Oh, and they were terrified of Alyx's corgis, and it was hysterically funny watching the corgis lording it over a pair of hellhounds. Well, it was funny as long as Uncle Stu didn't catch you calling them hellhounds. Having hand-raised them, he was a bit over-protective.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Instructors are constantly being pressured to “accept” AI as a benevolent technology. The weight of anxiety and depression among academic staff right now—particularly in the humanities—is overwhelming. I’ve never seen so many colleagues in mental crisis as I do now. All for profit.
