I wrote this two years ago, when the Roberts Bank terminal expansion was clearly heading toward some kind of approval — but well before another new oil pipeline was going to feed into it. This Pacific Link pipeline will add even more noise stress to the underwater recordings included in this piece:

Critically endangered orcas in B.C. are struggling to navigate in a sea of shipping noise
Our need for transportation and shipping is causing a kind of pollution that’s invisible (and in this case, inaudible) to humans. What does all this noise mean for the 75 or so Southern Resident Kille...

On Canada's National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, settlers like me have no excuse not to work harder toward reconciliation. Canada has a horrific legacy of genocidal acts perpetrated against Indigenous Peoples upon whose stolen and unceded lands we live. Here's a book I recently read/recommend:
Cover of 'Everyday Reconciliation, published in 2026 and co-authored by Derek Aronhie:nens Montour, an Indigenous man who grew up on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Territory, and Swedish immigrant to Canada, Elin Sandberg Miller. With personal stories and perspectives shared from each and tips to make reconciliation an everyday goal
and act. The image is of a book with a red cover and two white speaker bubbles intersecting with a colourful feather illustrated overtop of where the speaking bubbles intersect. Photo credit: Nancy Forde.
