I make a living writing science fiction and fantasy. Mostly fantasy. It's been said I've never met a trope I didn't skewer. I'm good with that. Also, there's cats. And knitting. she/her

Today's word is TREAT. Today's #BookQW is from Direct Descendant (DAW Books 2025) a contemporary fantasy taking place just west of Timmins, ON, where small town values are subject to variable definitions but all the dogs are still good dogs. Available in pb, audio, & digital. Shop indie if you can.
Lower left the cover of Direct Descendant, yellow and green and black with a bakery, a woman eating a cup cake, framing silver birch, and tentacles. Because it's always better with tentacles.

They tolerated the bloodlines and Daffodil had a somewhat- threatening version of begging for treats. Dexter had come embarrassingly close to eating a train engineer who'd strayed a little too far from the station. Oh, and they were terrified of Alyx's corgis, and it was hysterically funny watching the corgis lording it over a pair of hellhounds. Well, it was funny as long as Uncle Stu didn't catch you calling them hellhounds. Having hand-raised them, he was a bit over-protective.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'knew' #BookQW #BookSky Dan Mackmain has no idea what made the noise he's just heard. He'd never have guessed the challenges he'll face, way beyond his skills and experience. Did you know The Green Man's Holiday ebook is a Kindle 99p offer now, price-matched elsewhere?
Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Book extract reads: As well as a folder of information about the cottage for visitors, I saw a shallow wicker basket filled with leaflets. Fin started sorting through them.
‘There’s a lot of ancient stuff around here. A couple of hillforts. A Roman villa. This one has a couple of circular walks we could do, if we fancied looking at standing stones.’
She tossed leaflets for Wookey Hole and the Cheddar caves back in the basket. She knew I wouldn’t be interested in those. I’m too tall to be comfortable in dark, cramped spaces underground.
‘Right.’ I closed my eyes and wondered why it’s so hard to find furniture with a back tall enough for someone like me. I shifted sideways and slid down the cushions until I could rest my head properly. That made drinking my tea awkward, but I felt my headache easing.
I listened to the soft rustle of paper and Fin making faint noises of surprise and approval as she found something interesting. Then I heard something else. I opened my eyes.
Fin was staring at me, concerned. ‘Was that a cat?’

Today's word is KNEW. Today's #BookQW from INTO THE BROKEN LANDS (@dawbooks.bsky.social 2022) a created world fantasy with six POVs, two timelines, & a long hard look at what it means to be human. Kick-ass women & witty repartee included. Available in pb, digital, and audio. Shop indie if you can.
In the upper half, against a background of tentacles, are the digital cover (tentacles and a broken tower) and the original DAW cover (a broken tower and circling crows). In the upper half, the quote.

If it was the story of the flying pig from the Captain's Chronicle and how many flying pigs could there be -Lyelee suspected None had
not told these children the ending. The pig had exploded. On the other hand, they didn't seem too upset about the loss of the sheep, so maybe she had. Lyelee made a mental note to find this Nonee and see if she knew why the pig had exploded. Neither the chronicles nor the Archives had included what was inarguably an important detail.

Today's word is TREE. Today's #BookQW from Summon the Keeper (DAW Books, Inc. 1998) a contemporary fantasy set in Kingston, Ontario where even though the cat never shuts up, Hell still gets all the best lines. Available wherever you buy ebooks. Shop indie if you can.
The digital cover is in the upper right: a spooky house with things happening in every window (werewolf, bat, fire tentacles) and caution tape over the door. A black and white cat lounges disdainfully on the roof. The background is the house and the quote is in a yellow/orange rectangle.

Thunder cracked, lightning lit up the sky, and it started to rain harder. Down the center of the street, where the reaching leaves of the huge, old trees didn't quite touch, grape-sized drops of water hit the pavement so hard they bounced. On the sidewalk, under the trees, it was ...
     ..not significantly drier.

Barnes and Noble is running a pre-order special on SAVED BY THE SPELL (contemporary/AU fantasy standalone) over the 9th to the 11th of September. (Because I have a tenuous grasp on the date, I totally forgot to mention this yesterday.)
On the right, the cover of SAVED BY THE SPELL, a classroom with an eye looking out of the blackboard and a bunch of swirly magiky stuff. Some of the desks are warped. There's an apple on the teacher's desk. No one actually gives her an apple in the book, but...visual shorthand. The text across the bottom of the book reads, author of Direct Descendant.

Text reads: Barnes and Noble preorder sale. Discounts starting at 25% off. for B&N Premium and Reward members. With code PREORDER25 some exclusions may apply.

Today's word is DRIP. Today's #BookQW from DIRECT DESCENDANT (DAW Books, Inc. 2025), a standalone contemporary fantasy (or cozy horror, depending on if you're talking to me or marketing) takeing place in Northern Ontario, land of the silver birch, home of the...not quite moose. Shop indie if you can
Lower left the cover of Direct Descendant, yellow and green and black with a bakery, a woman eating a cup cake, framing silver birch, and tentacles. Because that's the way we roll.

By the time I got back to the guest house, sweat dripped continuously off my chin and rolled in slow motion into my cleavage like a titillating shot in one of those terrible 90's fantasies resurrected by streaming services. Inside the blessed air conditioning, I slowly climbed the three stairs from the side door to the first floor, damp denim dragging against my shins. I didn't know shins could sweat. First time for everything.

They’re all coming to her sister Iris’s wedding. Frankly, Dan’s dreading it. At least plenty of other guests will have connections to the supernatural. The bride and groom can turn into swans, for a start.
Since Dan’s still a loner at heart, he and Fin have planned a few days away together afterwards. Just the two of them in a quiet country cottage should be nice and relaxing. Dan should have remembered what folk wisdom says about making plans.

Today's word is APPEAR. Today's #BookQW from the story NOT THAT KIND OF WAR in the eCollection Shorter Parts of Valor which includes a Torin Kerr/Confederation story original to the collection. Available where you buy your digital reading. Shop indie if you can.
Digital cover upper left with the image of a woman in uniform holding a really big gun that makes the centre piece of the cover expanded on the upper right. Under it, the quote.

Every now and then, she could see the desire to do great things rise in his eyes.
"You want to live on after you die, Staff." He danced his fingers over his touchpad, drawing out a martial melody. "Having done
something that makes it into a song."
Torin didn't so much want Lieutenant Franks to live on after he died as to live on for a good long time, so she smacked that desire down every time she saw it and worried about what would happen should it make an appearance when she wasn't around. The enemy smacked down with considerably more force. And what little she'd heard of their music, sucked.

Today's word is QUESTION. Today's #BookQW from OH GLORIOUS SIGHT, a short story in the e-collection Nights of the Round Table. This story originally started about 3,500 words earlier with a vast array of historical & political details that sank it before the Mathew ever left the dock. 1/3
A medieval structure, probably a cathedral, floats on a cloud with my name across the clear blue sky at the top and the title NIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE & OTHER STORIES across the cloud.

The tenders rowed The Matthew down the channel and left her at King's Road, riding at anchor with half a dozen other ships waiting for an east wind to fill the sail.
     "Where's the boy?"
"Now that's a right good question, Mister Hennet." Rennie pulled the ratline tight and tested his knot. "Off somewhere dark and safe's my guess."
The mate snorted. "We've ballast enough. Master Cabot wants him taught."
"It'd be like teachin' one of the wee folk. He's here, but he's no a part of us. It's like of the the only other livin' thing he sees is Master
Cabot."
"It's right like havin' a stray dog around, "offered another of the crew. "The kind what runs off with his tail 'tween his legs when ya
tries ta make friends."

On the left, a dark can almost covered by a vertical yellow oval. On the oval: a crest, the name of the beer and the brewing company, the information that this is an award winning beer - well deserved btw - and a red maple leaf. On the left, a dark beer in a Burger King Uhura glass.
