NYT has gained monopoly power in the American liberal economy. With no comparable competition, they can say “fine, good luck elsewhere” to nearly any person, idea, or story they want US liberalism’s ideas became more based in what NYT wants, not which ideas are strongest or best. Monopoly power!

From me and @adambonica.bsky.social earlier this year www.bostonreview.net/forum/how-no...
The pathologies of popularism are further evident in the retirement of Jared Golden. A moderate Democrat who won a Trump-leaning district in Maine, he is something like a LeBron James of politics for popularists. As we noted, however, by 2025 his favorability was deep in the red. In an apparent exception to the popularist principle that you must obey public opinion rather than try to change it, Yglesias did not counsel Golden to retire early due to his low favorability but rather claimed that
"progressive criticism of Golden has driven him from office." To add insult to injury, Golden joined Suozzi as one of the seven House Democrats to vote to
increase DHS funding two weeks ago - and he took this vote after he announced he wouldn't run again.
So much for Ezra Klein's argument that Democrats must "learn from" Golden.

The business model of spam fundraising depends on hooking a group of elderly donors who give at a disturbing frequency, summing to sizable amounts. Most of them don't appear especially wealthy. I've compiled a handful of these cases. There are thousands of cases like these in the FEC data. 🧵
A data graphic detailing recurring political donations by a 79-year-old Kansas resident charged 45,331 times since 2018 for a total of $153,856. The top timeline chart shows daily donation frequency from November 2019 through December 2020, highlighting a sharp increase leading up to the 2020 election that peaked at 352 charges in a single day. The bottom horizontal bar chart lists the top 12 recipient committees out of 485 total—led by the Congressional Black Caucus PAC ($7,521 across 2,250 charges), NDTC, and Stop Republicans—noting that the 10 largest recipients represent only 24% of all contributions, with the remainder dispersed across hundreds of PACs, party committees, and candidates.

The full analysis is in Rivera's own follow-up, Blue by 2032, out today. It draws on my research: skyrocketing fundraising costs, hundreds of millions of dollars spent on donor lists, 57 cents of every grassroots dollar going to fundraising and consulting in 2025.

Adam Bonica @adambonica.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Last year I was interviewed by Paul Rivera for the DNC's after-action review. He told me then that fundraising reform would likely meet the greatest resistance from the party and its operatives. A passage (highlighted) Rivera says was sent but left out of the report the DNC released: 🧵
The highlighted passage is what Rivera claims was left out of the DNC’s report.

The DNC bears some responsibility for this ecosystem. During the 2019 nominating process, candidates seeking the presidential nomination had to meet grassroots donor thresholds as well as other benchmarks identified by the DNC to make the debate stage. This led many candidates to make significant investments in online fundraising and other tactics to capture grassroots donors. The intense pressure to make the debates left campaigns with few options.

[By Charter, the DNC has the authority and responsibility to publish a code of fair campaign practices “including but not limited to providing information to campaigns; agreements between the Democratic National Committee and campaigns; fundraising; and common
vendors.”46 The DNC Chair is required to put this code in place before each Presidential cycle.]
The DNC can and should adopt a fundraising code of conduct to ensure grassroots fundraising remains ethically aligned and is more effective going into the future.

As Bonica writes, the costs and risks for Democrats are compounding:
Every dollar spent on fundraising consultants, list rentals, and SMS spammers is a dollar
not spent on voter contact, organizing, or actual political communication. Campaigns
that should be building movements are instead building donor databases. Political
energy that could mobilize communities gets redirected into optimizing email subject
lines and testing which desperate plea extracts the most dollars from exhausted
supporters.
