It’s astounding this isn’t the only thing people are talking about. It shows how much power mainstream news, who are blacking out the climate element of this El Niño, still holds. #ClimateCrisis

After watching the first episode of this season of Slow Horses, I'm dreaming of a show that actually does follow the daring adventures of transit authority operatives, fixing potholes and thinking about many kinds of vehicles. Rescuing pedestrians! Making protected bike lines! Reducing traffic!

A lot of liars really like to reference common sense. Too many cars driving too much in your city because of #CarDependency is the opposite of common sense. Polluting your air and fuelling #ClimateChange while limiting choices in how we can get around in cities is the opposite of common sense.

Wanting lower property insurance and healthcare for everyday families isn't un-American; it’s what working people deserve. They can take their tech-bro cash and their weird, intrusive agenda somewhere else, because I'm not going any damn place. /3

when I say that I privately hope the strait never opens and gasoline prices stay elevated, some people say that I am openly wishing for pain. but that's fine. because it's pain sooner or later. we figure out how to live without gas now, or in the future when everything hurts just too much

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Agreed. The framing of climate as too sad or boring is definitely fossil fuel framing. And an excuse for careerists to not make waves.

I haven’t seen Digger yet but here’s why making a big commercial film about the empirically verified imminent collapse of the livable world is so tricky, especially with critics: it is by its very nature over the top. And 500 years of stable climate grown aesthetics tells us over the top = bad.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

How to avoid sexual assault! A QUICK AND EASY GUIDE*

sexual violence centre cork

1 DON'T PUT DRUGS IN PEOPLE'S DRINKS

4 WHEN YOU SEE A WOMAN WALKING BY HERSELF, LEAVE HER ALONE.

3 WHEN YOU COME ACROSS SOMEONE WHO IS DRUNK OR ASLEEP, THE BEST THING TO DO IS NOT RAPE THEM.

6 CARRY A WHISTLE. IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT RAPE SOMEONE, BLOW THE WHISTLE UNTIL SOMEONE COMES TO STOP YOU.

2 USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM! IF YOU CAN'T STOP YOURSELF FROM SEXUALLY ASSAULTING SOMEONE, ASK A TRUSTED FRIEND TO ACCOMPANY YOU AT ALL TIMES TO STOP YOU.

5 IF YOU ARE IN A LIFT AND SOMEONE STEPS IN, REMEMBER NOT TO SEXUALLY ASSAULT THEM.

*for perpetrators.

The current huge story about the gang rape at Cornell University, a crime originally brushed off and covered up by the administration, is SOLELY the product of the student paper, the Cornell Daily Sun, which doggedly pursued the story. Not the NYT or CNN. An independent student paper. #Cornell

One of the things to come from GamerGate was the gamification of torturing real, live women...hounding them out of their homes, making them look over their shoulders for years. It was treated as a joke, nbd, the work of a few bad apples--as all terrorism against women is--& that failure leads here.

And the last one I’ll mention is for mothers to set boundaries in their own relationships with their sons. The way he treats you is a model for how he treats all other women. If you succumb to the social pressure to make every sacrifice for him, he will expect the same of other women too.

Teach your son to wait. Teach him that other people are as important as he is. Teach him to apologize and go back to the end of the line if he made an entitled decision. Teach him that girls and women deserve respect in *all* scenarios—not just during sex.

Sharing with alt text because it’s that important.
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised
