Been thinking about this a lot recently.
“I Worked It Out. You Have Killed Two Point Three Three Eight People” said the golem calmly.
“I have never laid a finger on anyone in my life, Mr. Pump. I may be – all the things you know I am, but I am not a killer! I have never so much as drawn a sword!”
“No, You Have Not. But You Have Stolen, Embezzled, Defrauded, And Swindled Without Discrimination, Mr. Lipvig. You Have Ruined Businesses And Destroyed Jobs. When Banks Fail, It Is Seldom Bankers Who Starve. Your Actions Have Taken Money From Those Who Had Little Enough To Begin With. In A Myriad Small Ways You Have Hastened The Deaths Of Many. You Did Not Know Them. You Did Not See Them Bleed. But You Snatched Bread From Their Mouths And Tore Clothes From Their Backs. For Sport, Mr. Lipvig. For Sport. For The Joy Of The Game.”

The creator of VeggieTales agonized over the relationship between his art and spirituality that mirrors the exact same internal turmoil that many religious artists have fought with over the years:
Two paragraphs of text that basically say that the creator of VeggieTales decided to never depict Jesus or demonstrate that vegetables could have a redemptive relationship with God.

I was tempted to skip this step (because *don’t wanna 😭*) but I finally made an hour by hour timeline of this book. Turns out, I had the sun setting after a 2pm meeting, a law office open at night, and a family dinner at 3pm 🤦🏼 Still don’t ever wanna, but I find it always needs doing 😅

I've started writing draft back cover copy early in my draft 1) because it's easier then but 2) as @zoeyorkwrites.bsky.social says, it helps me sell the book TO MYSELF.

I feel inadequate to describe a book like this with the right superlatives--I don't want to reduce the book down to one thing in doing so... but I hope Omar El Akkad's One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This will find a large audience.

Josh Shapiro called the McDonald’s employee who reported Luigi Mangione a “hero.” She will NOT get the $10,000 reward money because she called 911 instead of the tip line. By the way, Josh Shapiro got $15,000 in donations from United Healthcare last year. Numbers are fun.

In my upcoming book, I show that, beginning in the 1980s, framing homelessness as a problem of mental illness and addiction was politically engineered to obscure the socioeconomic roots of the crisis and to justify the removal of homeless people from public space. bsky.app/profile/bria...

Writing is a lot like weight training. You won't be able to lift a lot at first. You start small. Short session, light weights. Day by day though you get just a *little* stronger. Eventually your sessions get longer, the bars get heavier, and everyone says "I could never do that." Just like you did.

I’m just consistently blown away by how cool our kid is. I bought her a velour tracksuit she asked for and she took it, lowered the waistline, brought in the legs, and flared the bottoms, on her sewing machine last night. She’s 13! It’s just so fun to watch her creativity blossom.

I've been researching the idea of Unconditional Universal Basic Income since 2013. Here's a collection of findings I've compiled from various UBI experiments and studies of cash transfer programs around the world. This will be a VERY LONG and ongoing thread focused entirely on empirical evidence. 🧵
OBSERVED EFFECTS OF UBI

No significant reduction in labor supply (38 studies meta-analysis)

Increased self-employment (301%) and part-time employment (17%)

Slight decrease in alcohol and tobacco use (31 studies meta-analysis)

New mothers extend their maternity leaves

Birth weights improve due to better maternal nutrition

Graduation rates and educational outcomes improve

Hospitalization rates decline (8.5%)

Crime goes down (15%–42%) especially illegal hunting (95%)

Domestic violence decreases (30%–51%)

Trust increases (13% in politicians | 6% in other people)

Home ownership rates increase (17%–26%)

Food security increases as does consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables

Improved cognitive functioning (43%) and personality traits (31%)

Savings go up, debts go down

There's no info on the card about the cat, but the photo is by my favorite of the Victorian/Edwardian cat photographers, C.E. Bullard. His cats always look relaxed and comfortable, not crammed into costumes or restrained in anthropomorphic poses. He seemed to really love cats.

Oathbreakers: The War of Brothers That Shattered an Empire and Made Medieval Europe Hardcover – December 10, 2024
by David Perry and Matthew Gabriele:
By the early ninth century, the Carolingian empire was at the height of its power. The Franks, led by Charlemagne, had built the largest European domain since Rome in its heyday. Though they jockeyed for power, prestige, and profit, the Frankish elites enjoyed political and cultural consensus. But just two generations later, their world was in shambles. Civil war, once an unthinkable threat, had erupted after Louis the Pious’s sons tried to overthrow him—and then placed their knives at the other’s neck. Families who had once charged into battle together now drew each other’s blood.
