The weird thing about growing up on "twitter is for shitposting and dog photos"-internet is that you still don't use your real name prominently a decade later but then you become an academic and the nice journal folks can't tag you in your publication. Anyway: I did a science! It was fun 😌 #rstats

Started doing a bit of housekeeping on #batchtools, a pkg you might remember from that time you submitted a trillion Slurm jobs to a cluster and making the admin cry. Also found out none other than @masalmon.eu reviewed the JOSS paper! Small world. github.com/openjournals...

Heads up. Don't submit to CRAN right now. The CRAN submission system is currently broken, because Windows checks won't complete. If you submit your package will end up in the manual "inspection" queue. You'll see the same on win-builder R devel and R 4.6.1. The R 4.5.3 still works. #RStats

Yesterday, we released a new version of anvl: github.com/r-xla/anvl. You can use it to implement numerical algorithms in R and run it on CPU and GPU. The R Code is compiled, so you do not have interpreter overhead, and it also allows you to automatically compute gradients #rstats

It is no coincidence that rationalists and EAs tend to be straight white guys from well-off families, because for everybody else, the world usually conspires to knock some sense into you about your inherent god-emperor genius by the time you’re old enough to drink.

the Eliezer Yudkowsky superhero origin story is truly so intensely dorky as to defy all attempts at parody. you could not waterboard any of this out of me web.archive.org/web/20010309...
His autobiography even opens with a parable: as a small child he threw his favorite squirtgun off a third-floor balcony rather than accept that his mother could lend out what was his, and felt complete when he heard it hit the pavement. He goes on to describes himself as a specialist in the technological transformation of the human species, one of the few people alive with the standing to steer it. He identifies with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the one person who sees the danger clearly and has to act while everyone else gets on with ordinary life.

I’m helping colleagues with DB access stuff via #Positron in both #rstats and Python. In R I can point them to the keyring pkg to store their DB pw and user so they don’t hardcode credentials in scripts, there surely is a comparable solution in Pytjon, right? Want to avoid interactive prompts.

Survey of German academics finds restrictions on academic freedom are rare and not associated with academic position, discipline or gender, but expectations of restrictions are higher among precarious academics. Hope this paper gets attention, as it does not confirm media stereotypes of academia

Pen, watercolor, black & white charcoal pencil.

Another featured piece from the Spooky Pants book.

A man in a sweater stands with his hands on his hips looking out of a large window with the curtains open. Things aren’t looking good outside, reader. A massive winged demon is emerging from the clouds as dozens of little ghosts and bone demons rip through the sky. On the ground below we see townsfolk running through the grass. Our man in the window is in no mood for this. He lets us know, “Oh, I am in no mood for this.” His dog looks out the window as well, wagging its tail.

Fantasia (1940) inspired drawing. I think I could’ve gone a little heavier with the chaos outside but we’ll try again with fresh drawings this October. I like how the clouds turned out. Trying to balance my sloppy lines with more detail can be tricky but I think we achieved a good result.

In case anyone was wondering: yes, the AirPods 5 fit in the case of the AirPods 4, but the case then makes a bloop and lets you know there’s a mismatch. Same the other way around with the 4’s in the 5 case.

Anthropic's models run on terabytes of VRAM. It's not going to "just copy itself to other computers."

Rohan Paul

Jacob Coxon's next interview on CBS News (ex Anthropic+Open AI researcher who resigned)

"We can't just unplug it because it could be copying itself over to other computers. Like it's not that difficult to find yourself because an AI is just code. It could transfer itself over the internet to a different place and then you unplug it here, but it's actually still over there and maybe it makes 10,000 copies of itself and they're all cooperating."

This is interesting. You get assigned to being born at a random place and time in history, to see what a typical person's life might have been like then. Unfortunately I was born in 1403 in the valley of Mexico and died at age 4 from dysentery.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The title is “Cats living together”.
The first panel shows a black cat and orange cat cuddling with their eyes closed. The orange cat says “I love you”. The black cat says “I love you too”.
The second panel zooms in on them.
The third panel shows the orange cat opening its eyes.
The fourth panel shows the orange cat raising its paw to punch the black cat. It says, “Actually you know what”.

the claude dining experience
There is a Claude sitting at a table at the Full Picture Restaurant, with another Claude attending to him. The Claude at the table (with teeth) is wearing a belt and suspenders (with intentional seams). The Claude waiter is wearing a red tie and blue blazer.

On the table are two shakers of coarse-grained salt and freshly ground truth. There is also a plate of spaghetti ("substrate") with load-bearing sauce, flanked by a genuine fork and a knife with a genuinely sharp point.

In addition to the main course, there are two sides (and it's worth separating them): a charcuterie board, and a salad (all green). There's also a glass of water with a slice of lemon (that's the wedge).

The waiter is holding a block of parmesan and a grater above the spaghetti, and saying "Just say the word."
