I've been thinking and talking and writing about the death penalty for my whole adult life and the past week+ has been truly surreal and exhausting, not only because of the onslaught of horrors but because there seems to be so little historical memory of what this system is and always has been.

It does look very much like Swamp White Oak. Leaf color (top and bottom), long peduncle, the fringed acorn cap, the leaf texture, and leaf shape. The only bit that is a bit off from Q bicolor are the buds which are a bit bigger than typical and it looks like the bud scales have light edges.

Bolas spiders are not easy to find, but I have had the good luck to recently find two. This one had 6 "bolas" hung from the branch that she was suspended from. When she hunts, she emits a pheromone that mimics her moth prey. On approach, she swings the sticky bolas to snare them. #arachtober
A female Bolas spider, Mastophora sp, perched amongst the petioles and buds of a hickory tree. Her legs are folded up tight against her body. The top of her abdomen is adorned with light tan marks akin to some form of alien writing that is reflected symmetrical about her axis of symmetry. Gossamer threads suspend milky white sticky blobs against a near black background. These are the bolas spider's hunting tools. This one has suspended 6 from a thin branch.

The tortuous, botched execution of Christa Pike is truly horrifying. And while it feels unique in some ways, in reality it is also only the latest in a history of botched executions going back years — YEARS — in numerous states. Please know: this is the reality of the death penalty in this country.

I found a cricket leech after work today! :0 Cricket leeches are the larval form of solitary wasps in the family Rhopalosomatidae, which is the ancestral branch of all paper and potter wasps.
A photo of a dark bean-like entity stuck to the side of a cricket between its body and left hind leg. The cricket's posture looks like if a basketball player was trying to hide the fact that they got bit by a tick the size of a poodle, carrying it casually under one arm. The wasp may not directly kill its host, but the loss of so much hemolymph will likely reduce the cricket's lifespan. A photo of the same unfortunate pair from further away, so you can see the scale of the parasite. The cricket is gravid and will likely lay her eggs soon, parasitic wasp be damned. #girlpower
