webrarian is a new R package. It turns a folder of R scripts and data into a static website where R runs in the visitor's browser, with no compute server and nothing to install. blog.thecoatlessprofessor.com/posts/introd... #rstats #webr #webassembly
A card for the R package webrarian. Large text reads "A folder in. A website out." On the left, a small card lists a folder named lab-01 holding lab.R, setup.R and a data folder. A red arrow points from it to a browser window that shows a scatterplot of car weight against miles per gallon with brick-red points. The address coatless-wasm.github.io/webrarian is on the card.

I just rebuilt my website using Quarto 🎉 My publication list generates itself from my Zotero library, and papers include links to materials and OA versions. The website's first post is on how to build your own, featuring an app that does all the coding for you: dsquintana.com/posts/quarto...
Screenshot of Daniel S. Quintana's academic homepage. A circular profile photo of me sits above my name, title "Professor of Psychology · University of Oslo," and buttons for Email, Scholar, ORCID, OSF, LinkedIn, Bluesky, and YouTube. To the right, a bio describes him as a Professor of Psychology at the University of Oslo leading a lab on biological systems linking psychological and social factors to health, focused on neuroendocrine systems and the autonomic nervous system. Below are "Research interests" (oxytocin system in health and wellbeing, cardiac psychophysiology, evidence synthesis, meta-science) and "Featured papers" listing two publications with titles, authors, journals, and brief descriptions.Screenshot of the Publications page, introducing the Behavioral Neuroendocrinology Lab and noting that preprints and materials are linked where available. Under a "2026" heading, five publication entries are listed with full citations (authors, year, title, journal, DOI links), each tagged with badges like "Data & code," "Preprint," or "Open access article."Screenshot of the Talks page, noting that slides are posted on OSF. Under "2026," two talks are listed: "Recalibrating human oxytocin research: from methods to function to theory" (Harvard Interdisciplinary Oxytocin Research Initiative, online) and "Social media for academics" (NMBU, in-person), each with a "Slides" link. Under "2025," three more talks are listed: "Open science intro for psychology master students," "Start-up scholar workshop," and "Synthetic data workshop," all at the University of Oslo, in-person, each with a "Slides" link.Screenshot of a blog post titled "How to create a simple academic website," tagged "Website" and "Quarto," authored by Daniel S. Quintana and published July 25, 2026. The text explains that the site was built using the Quarto publishing system, describes advantages over his previous R-based approach (easier Zotero-based publication updates, links to open data/code, and open-access versions of paywalled papers), and introduces two methods for readers to build a similar site: cloning the GitHub repo or using a Shiny web app that generates the code with the user's own info.

Beta regression is underused in psychology. Back in the day, it was hard or impossible to do with software. Things have changed and you can now do it for free and with about as much ease as any other GLM. Whether you need description, prediction, or causal inference--beta regression can do it all.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: underwater ocean camera view of a whale fall on the sea floor, with various bottom feeders and weird fishes crawling around the decomposing remains. Off panel, someone says, “hang on a second…” Panel 2: the speaker is a member of a marine biologist crew, remotely viewing the video footage from a computer monitor. The biologist is leaning against his colleague’s chair. He continues, “pan the camera back.” Panel 3: Back underwater, the POV shifts to the other end of the whale carcass. There’s a large spider crab with a standing just off to the side. It has a human face in a neutral expression, and is wearing glasses. The marine biologist says, “I think I went to high school with that guy.”

did you know that the word "amortize" comes from a Latin word meaning to make dead? anyway, this looks like a genuinely cool paper!
Figure 1: Graph processing pipeline. Graph description: Directed acyclic graph of a two-level model with population
mean µ, population standard deviation τ , group-level means {λj}, observations yji, and observation-level standard
deviation ω. The dashed box denotes that the group-level means λj and observations yji are sampled independently.
Graph expansion: The interior node λj is split into two conditionally independent instances λ1 and λ2, each receiving
the same parent nodes µ and τ . This makes the exchangeability of groups explicit in the graph structure, allowing the
inversion to determine that each instance conditions only on its own data and the global parameters. Graph inversion:
Inversion of the expanded two-level model using outer-nodes-first ordering (µ, τ, ω, λ1, λ2). In the inverse graph, each
λj conditions only on its own group data yj = {yji} and the global parameters µ, τ , ω, so the per-group inference
becomes amortizable: a single inference network can be used for all J groups. Network architecture: Architecture
derived from the inverse graph. Each inference network has its own summary network. The local summary network
encodes the observation of each group into a group-level summary, from which the local inference network infers
λj . The global summary network pools all observations into a single representation of the dataset, from which the
global inference network infers µ, τ , and ω. The dashed box denotes that the local summary and inference networks are
applied independently for each group.

So the broader point is this: No matter how you slice it, this El Niño event is a very big deal. It is already either the strongest by far (ONI) or tied for strongest (RONI) on record. It will likely become strongest on record, by any measure, by Nov.
Plot by Daniel Swain showing temporal evolution of ONI vs RONI index during 2026, representing two different ways to visualize El Nino intensity. The ONI has been at record levels since May, and the RONI has been at near-record levels since June. Data directly from NOAA.

An oceanographic buoy is seen close-up at sea during twilight. The yellow and blue hull of the buoy, bearing a dark blue logo that reads "OOI" and "OCEAN OBSERVATORIES INITIATIVE" in capital letters, occupies the right side of the frame.

Mounted on top of the buoy is a complex, white metal structure consisting of concentric rings and spokes supporting various scientific instruments, sensors, and a small solar panel. Several ropes—two blue and one yellow—stretch from the left side of the frame toward the sky.

In the background, the calm ocean meets a clear sky featuring a gradient sunset that transitions from a bright orange horizon line to a deep indigo night sky above.

There it is 😡
Nature, which previously reported on NSF’s grants shortfall, said it can “be attributed mainly” to the agency keeping more than $1 billion in an account, much of which is for the White House’s Grand Research Challenges project, which is meant to support specific fields, including artificial intelligence. The project was mentioned in one line in a Sept. 10 NSF memo: “In the coming weeks and months, NSF will announce a series of Grand Research Challenges to take thesis-driven bets that stand to unlock new frontiers of S&T [science and technology].”
