This is a good day to ponder what an amazing deal B.C. residents have enjoyed thanks to public auto insurance. Avg nominal premiums are no higher than 9 years ago when J.Horgan was elected Premier, vs 45% avg increase in Canada and 119% in next-door Alberta. Data from StatsCan. #bcpoli

Big cities must do better to fix the housing crisis. We have a severe shortage of homes, yet cities like Vancouver continue to block apartments across most residential areas, driving up the cost of market and non-market homes alike. New from me in the Vancouver Sun vancouversun.com/opinion/op-e...

Opinion: B.C.’s big cities must do better to fix the housing crisis
Cities too often use their powers to restrict housing or make it too expensive to build while forcing new housing onto noisy main roads

The City of Seattle is shutting down a cafe’s outdoor deck because the code says any outdoor dining must be 50’ away from a residential property due to noise concerns Funny, we shove all housing growth on the loudest roads our city has. I guess that noise is fine?

MEANWHILE, in Canada, meet Brady Rogers, the reluctant politician who's fed up and thinks he can do better. His sign says "I barely want to do this." His website says, "I guess I'm running for Kelowna city council." His business? Recycling plastic into cool things.
lawn sign with a grumpy man in a "DADLIFE" sweatshirt and the sign says "I barely want to do this" with his name and campaignHi, I’m Brady.
Do I enjoy politics? No.

Do I know what I’m doing? No.

But am I qualified? Also no.

I was born in Williams Lake and raised in Kelowna since I was 10. These are the streets I biked every day, the cars I threw crab apples at (sorry), and the parks I played in. Seeing this city grow has been cool, but with growth has come a whole new spectrum of challenges. Running for council is the last thing I saw myself doing this year. I don’t like meetings, I don’t like having to be certain places at certain times, and I’m allergic to stuffy offices. But unfortunately, I happen to like Kelowna, and think I can help do some good.I guess I’m running for Kelowna city council.
Support the campaignI graduated from UBCO in 2015ish (long story) and worked for 4 years as a robotic automation engineer. As cool as the job was, it was soulless, and I wanted to use my abilities for more than just helping huge companies save money.

Since 2019, I’ve been building The Rogerie.
Starting as a farmers market booth beside the mall, my wife and I began turning plastic waste into new products in our laundry room. Seven painful years later, and we have a pretty awesome shop downtown by Sprout (come check it out!) where you’ll find me just about every day.

I find it really fascinating that, in a country driven by individualism and capitalism, many people think they should have control over other people's property. "The donut shop is closing because the owner wants to build townhomes? How can the city allow the owner to modify their property?"

This is a good thread. Ultimately, a winning strategy on climate looks the same as a winning strategy in the war on drugs - target demand reduction. Putting your efforts into fighting supply means those efforts will be wasted.

Without fail, anytime I've accompanied someone on day trip to a larger city, the retail that jumps out to them as the most attractive is anything woven into a residential neighbourhood. It shouldn't be radical that you don't need to get to a high street for all your small errands or dining out.
