Thinking about the selling point of "AI" supposedly "freeing up time" to do important things. Beyond devaluing the tasks that we can supposedly offload to software systems, it occurs to me that this is kind of opposite of mindfulness/being in the moment. >>

In light of the head of Trust & Safety talking about something akin to a social credit score on bluesky dot app, I'd like to re-up my response to a dev asking about toxicity a year ago, when it really became the buzzword the team was using:

We talk as though our data is more private when people aren't involved, but I don't think that's right. There's the invasion of privacy of, e.g. LEOs using Flock to stalk their exes, and there's the invasion of privacy when algorithmic systems make assumptions about us, correctly or not.

The Institution is dead, man. It's been dead. Now's the time for the punks, the fuckers that wanna punch above their weight class, that wanna write experimental, personal, weirdo, sick shit. They will stumble along the way but we will all be better for it: not financially, but in spirit.

As someone who wears an (older, not-listening) Apple Watch for essential health monitoring, I also worry about the social ramifications. Will I be forbidden or “discouraged” from wearing my Apple watch in public or work spaces due to pushback against these similar-looking “always-listening” models?

I guess a PSA for newer creators, if you get what seems to be a legit offer, you are totally ok to go to the agency’s real site, and email them directly in a new email “hey i just got an offer from you? Is this real?” And they will answer yes or no. They are just as pissed by the scams, I imagine!

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

What I find especially interesting is the section where they tried to get "Bella" to discuss her work and she couldn't with any depth or knowledge. This is the same thing that happens with students who use genAI for research or writing help. There is no there there.

the main problem with video as a format is that it's too slow at dispensing information. I can read much faster than you can talk and there's no way you can address this without becoming incomprehensible to most of the audience.

Monkey’s paw curls…
Bluesky post by Dr. Aaron Thierry, user name @thierryaaron.bsky.social.
The post says “1/ There's a system of ocean currents in the Atlantic that shapes Europe's #climate, drives monsoons, and keeps sea levels stable along the US coast.
In the last 5 years, the scientific evidence that it could collapse has shifted dramatically.
Most people have no idea.”
At the bottom of the post is a heat map of the Earth showing the ocean currents, focusing on the North Atlantic, where a patch of blue cold appears in between a blue cold current that runs along the U.S. coastline and a red warm current that extends toward Europe.

in case you've never seen it, this is Roger Ebert on The Mummy
There is within me an unslaked hunger for preposterous adventure movies. I resist the bad ones, but when a "Congo" or an
"Anaconda" comes along, my heart leaps up and I cave in. "The Mummy" is a movie like that. There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased. There is a little immaturity stuck away in the crannies of even the most judicious of us, and we should treasure it.
