Elon saying he’s going to reprogram his chatbot’s view of history is a perfect example of why these kinds of AI products aren’t the neutral “tools” people always defend them as. They’re little political projects reflecting the ideologies of their creators

Showing up at a crime scene with two cups of coffee and handing one to the officer in charge while asking him, “So, what do we have here?” is only appropriate if you’re a cop. I know that now.

People moving weird ain't new. But people feeling comfortable moving weird is a very recent thing. Being weird is not what I'm talking about. I said "moving weird." And if you're not 100% sure what that means, then this post isn't for you. Learn to be ok with that.

I have a pretty standard way of responding when someone likes something that I don’t. I leave them be to enjoy themselves and be happy. If I’m curious, we’re friends, and it’s appropriate, then maybe I’ll ask them what about that thing really makes them happy? Maybe I’m missing something great!

Great job everyone
The study revealed that AI chatbots actually created new job tasks for 8.4 percent of workers, including some who did not use the tools themselves, offsetting potential time savings. For example, many teachers now spend time detecting whether students use ChatGPT for homework, while other workers review AI output quality or attempt to craft effective prompts.

It's a really good case study for the importance of media literacy and understanding the interests of the people that provide you with information. But there's a reason the social sciences have been attacked for decades so I don't expect this to break through to the mainstream conversation.

The whole 'Grok is a boer now' thing is very funny, but it also really exposes how every 'AI tool' isn't just passively biased from training data, but actively designed to shape your worldview according to the interests of the billionaires who made them.

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."
