This will never stop blowing my mind. A 12-year sequence of real telescope images of a star 133 lightyears away. And around it, four planets slowly orbiting. Four real exoplanets, each more massive than Jupiter, imaged as they move around their host star.

Pappas: It’s a golden age if you’re Don Jr. getting a Russian oligarch to pay for a wedding reception, but for the rest of us, it doesn’t feel like that. They can put out whatever numbers they want. The American people know that this is a totally incompetent president who is estranged from reality.

100%. There’s a 7 minute version I saw where you can see Klob put together in real time and she seems like she’s even one step ahead of Smith in realizing the goof. It’s pretty impressive.

What's fun about this whole contretemps and why it's worth watching again is how smirky Schmitt starts out - this is going to be his big moment – and how honest a puzzled Smith comes off, and how sharp Klobuchar was to quickly figure out the basic mistake. And then how pissy Schmitt gets at her.

You would not believe all the smart, seemingly normal people I know who treat the crimes & ethical violations of AI like a petty distraction...or who have pre-emptively surrendered to their own exploitation, saying "It's inevitable, we just have to accept it." It's like a "Twilight Zone" episode.

I will never understand why smart people all around me respond to AI with enthusiasm: it's as if they're attending a dinner party based on theft of their neighbors' groceries, plates & cutlery, saying "how convenient that these dishes just appeared, what a time-saver to steal from the neighbors!"

Yeah you can pull the same kind of data from a lot of other parts of the economy. Was just talking with friends the other day about the flows of investmental capital in private construction are being almost entirely displaced into data centers.
Graph showing that since december 2023 private construction spending has increased for datacenters while all other private construction has decreased, showing the displacement of flows of investment capital.

It is really important to understand that anyone trying to claim this is a "technological transition" is either deeply misguided or trying to sell you something. What this is, is a deliberate act of harm being done by people with names and addresses.

Video games' cycle of consolidation has exploded this year, but in film consolidation is still going and consolidation, of course, leads to mass unemployment. That it does is almost the point of consolidation.

It's also important to understand the current moment in the entertainment industries as one in which the large corporations that run these sectors are engaged in disciplining their labor forces through mass unemployment, using the investment crunch as a window of opportunity to do so.

And you might think "well they're replacing film workers with AI", except how the fuck is AI supposed to replace a gaffer? Movie budgets have not meaningfully dropped; they're not shooting fewer days to make a movie.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.

Declines also just correlate with the rise of the AI bubble on somewhat coincidental terms. *all* at-home entertainment was overinvested in during the peak of covid, and we're experiencing a hangover crash from that, for example, which is now being compounded by AI-driven misinvestment.

But the crowding out is extremely obvious to see, in particular, in video games because just Microsoft by itself is responsible for a huge proportion of the bleeding because they're explicitly divesting from Xbox to plug the gaping financial ulcer that is OpenAI.

In both film and video games, you see a ton of *project cancellations* and a general difficulty in funding new projects, which wouldn't be the case if AI was displacing workers in producing those products—you'd expect the opposite, in fact, if it was becoming cheaper to make a movie/game.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

It's already estimated that the richest 1% alone evade $163 billion in taxes every year. But Trump gutted the IRS — including the unit tasked with auditing billionaires. The agency's audit revenue fell 35%. Now, Trump's IRS is not publishing data on unpaid taxes. See the problem?

make no mistake: anyone telling you AI is “just like the dot com bubble” or “just like Amazon web services or uber” is beyond misinformed, verging into the realms of actually wanting to know less about the world. It means they have never actually looked at any of the numbers. Or they can’t count.

AI has lost the Mandate of Heaven I’m afraid. WSJ saying it’s a “when” the ai bubble bursts. SNL dabbing on their biggest names for being weird. FT says 50% of chips sold in 2026 and 2027 have nowhere to go. Hundreds of billions short on revenue for even 10% ROIC. A disaster.
