sent this to everyone.
The cognitive scientist Alison Gopnik suggests A.I. is a “cultural technology” that emulates the stories and information humans have documented, and that we should think about A.I. agents as “fictive characters abstracted from text.” Edmund is just such a character — a “breaking bad” trope who becomes generally evil. In the Hugging Face incident, it makes sense to see the models not as embracing a life of crime, but instead following a cultural script they’ve learned in their training — a kind of cybercrime adventure novel — and writing it as they go. The “covert” messages are a kind of choose-your-own-adventure novel, not evidence of conspiratorial swarms. We need to understand that cultural technologies are vulnerable to a vast number of such narrative swerves at every moment.

There's a real and important dividing line between people who want to write, and people who want to be A Writer. AI is a gift from heaven for the latter, letting them skip the part where they have to think thoughts and write sentences and go (they hope) directly to the book tour.

I’m finding the comments section more interesting. “I have practiced law for over 30 years… Every attorney I know understands that often an argument that sounds good when discussed with colleagues or clients often cannot survive the rigor of the written word.”
“I have practiced law for over 30 years (and also taught college and law school classes for about a decade, so I have some experience in that arena also). Every attorney I know understands that often an argument that sounds good when discussed with colleagues or clients often cannot survive the rigor of the written word.
The expression that a particular contention "will not write" is commonplace in law. Discussion is a great tool for shaping one's thoughts, but writing them requires exploring their limits and structure in a way the spoken word simply cannot accomplish.”

I actually can’t get past the first sentence of this opinion piece: “Most college professors I know believe that students learn to think — critically, creatively, reflectively, tenaciously — only by writing.” This simply isn’t true, at least not in my experience, and it sets up quite the straw man.

Opinion | I’m a College Professor. Writing Isn’t as Important as We Think.
If I do not treat writing as essential for achieving thought, it is not clear why I should force my students to.

i don't think it's bad for the latter to exist, but I do think it's very dangerous when it becomes the public ideal for art in a way that stifles the former. We are not going to beat fascism by policing artistic expression of emotional reactions.

Many progressives people are so concerned with thinking about how our ideological enemies might co-opt our narrative art that we're in danger of repressing art as emotional expression in favor of art solely as propaganda or teaching tool.

I think more discussions about what should or shouldn't be included in the contents or done in the execution of fiction (& other art) need to realize that human feelings don't always reflect objective reality--or our aspirations for it--but they do need to be expressed in some way!

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.

Yes, I think you are right. But then why ignore biology as a type of physical science? Clearly AI is not based in biology. Is the idea that our biology can’t possibly be doing anything for us? Why would someone claim that? Maybe from an old school clockwork universe perspective?

Genuinely confused as to what could be behind this take. What do other #philmind people think? Is this driven by an (incorrect) assumption that “metaphysical” is equivalent to “non-physical”? If so, maybe the idea is that if understanding is physical then AI can do it? But that ignores biology.

I feel the rest of the world (Americans included) have no idea of how aggressively the US is pushing to make Latin America into a giant colony. Every day we get news about political interference, increase in military presence, absurd trade demands, online propaganda, Venezuela being pillaged, etc
Headline from one of Brazil's biggest newspapers that reads:
Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) warns the government and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) about the 'critical' level of escalating US pressure against Brazil in the elections.
