There's a real and important dividing line between people who want to write, and people who want to be A Writer. AI is a gift from heaven for the latter, letting them skip the part where they have to think thoughts and write sentences and go (they hope) directly to the book tour.

‘It’s Not an Issue’: Crime as a G.O.P. Line of Attack Loses Traction
Across the country, especially in the North Carolina Senate race, Republicans have charged opponents with being soft on crime, even as crime rates plummet.

I react very poorly when any proposed policy or plan is met with "but what if someone like Trump gets hold of it?? then it would be not good, but very bad" because there really is no law or institution that can work when a population is willing to elect the stupidest, worst asshole alive

I’m finding the comments section more interesting. “I have practiced law for over 30 years… Every attorney I know understands that often an argument that sounds good when discussed with colleagues or clients often cannot survive the rigor of the written word.”
“I have practiced law for over 30 years (and also taught college and law school classes for about a decade, so I have some experience in that arena also). Every attorney I know understands that often an argument that sounds good when discussed with colleagues or clients often cannot survive the rigor of the written word.
The expression that a particular contention "will not write" is commonplace in law. Discussion is a great tool for shaping one's thoughts, but writing them requires exploring their limits and structure in a way the spoken word simply cannot accomplish.”

I actually can’t get past the first sentence of this opinion piece: “Most college professors I know believe that students learn to think — critically, creatively, reflectively, tenaciously — only by writing.” This simply isn’t true, at least not in my experience, and it sets up quite the straw man.

Opinion | I’m a College Professor. Writing Isn’t as Important as We Think.
If I do not treat writing as essential for achieving thought, it is not clear why I should force my students to.

i don't think it's bad for the latter to exist, but I do think it's very dangerous when it becomes the public ideal for art in a way that stifles the former. We are not going to beat fascism by policing artistic expression of emotional reactions.

Many progressives people are so concerned with thinking about how our ideological enemies might co-opt our narrative art that we're in danger of repressing art as emotional expression in favor of art solely as propaganda or teaching tool.

I think more discussions about what should or shouldn't be included in the contents or done in the execution of fiction (& other art) need to realize that human feelings don't always reflect objective reality--or our aspirations for it--but they do need to be expressed in some way!

Yes, I think you are right. But then why ignore biology as a type of physical science? Clearly AI is not based in biology. Is the idea that our biology can’t possibly be doing anything for us? Why would someone claim that? Maybe from an old school clockwork universe perspective?

Genuinely confused as to what could be behind this take. What do other #philmind people think? Is this driven by an (incorrect) assumption that “metaphysical” is equivalent to “non-physical”? If so, maybe the idea is that if understanding is physical then AI can do it? But that ignores biology.

We all know SOMEONE who was pushed to the brink by covid, there’s some neat political lines some of these breaks fall into, but with many the psychological instability came first & then rooted around for “positions” to attach itself to, some of which were/are even inconsistent with each other.

A common mistake i see in online AI discourse is the framing: well, what makes you think they *aren't* conscious? It's a mistake because it puts the burden of proof on the wrong side; the question for AI's (or really anything) is: why should we think it *is* conscious?
