@beerfoodtravel.bsky.social I have a few of the stemmed Carling Black Label, but thought you might like to see this one found in a charity shop today, which is a little different. I hadn't come across one with 'Canadian Lager' before. Lovely bubbles in the glass & the gold rims are in decent order.

An interesting addition to the vintage Irish cookbook collection (from 1985). Kinsella is often referred to as "Ireland's first celebrity chef". His Dictionary of Irish Biography entry makes for fascinating reading: www.dib.ie/biography/ki...

An enjoyable trip in July to Emlagh Graveyard near Carlanstown, County Meath, a place I had long been meaning to visit. An early monastic site situated on an island in surrounding bogland. Only a handful of inscribed gravemarkers apart from those within the enclosed burial plot of the Flood family.

Does anyone remember this Irish board game? 'Proverbia 345' was developed by husband & wife George & Breege Murray from Adare in County Limerick, & launched circa 1990. Despite initial hopes, it seems to have never really taken off for them. (Photo & article from 'Irish Examiner' 18th April 1990.)

First published in 1910, 'The Glasgow Cookery Book' holds an unrivalled status among 20th-century Scottish cookbooks. I would say its popularity is comparable to Maura Laverty's 'Full and Plenty' here in Ireland, with copies cherished across generations. (Anyone for brain cakes?)

My dad's new favourite game is guessing the acreage of all the farmers in the parish on the 1926 census. He's scoring within the 10% range on a good 80% of his answers, many bang on. "I cut silage there with a single chop in 1976. I know all that land, so I do. Good land it is."

A stack of old records reveals many stories, one being that of "Pipe Major Nelius O'Cronin (Of Cork)". A fascinating life, but, sadly, a short one: he died at 26 in 1930 in Switzerland from tuberculosis. His body was brought back to Cork for a funeral that attracted huge crowds.

Happy 10 Year Anniversary to the Worst Christmas Card of All Time, sent by Michael Lowry TD to us poor Tipperary constituents.
A truly awful card, featuring a Christmas tree where each of the baubles represents a quality or value that Michael Lowry felt represented him. Such as Youth, Hard Working, Health, Security, Environment, Elderly, Kindness and, oddly, his own name several times.

Actually just having his own name in baubles would have been more appropriate given the amount of utter baubles he speaks

I like to think that this map of all the regional names for woodlice in the UK could also be a map illustrating the new tribes of humans to be found on the same landmass after The Great Digital Crash and ensuing breakdown of society.
