Presumed the name MiWadi was some sort of reference to the hydrological feature, but distressingly, no, it refers to (MI)neral (WA)ter (DI)stributors. Fuck this

My favourite website? You know, the one where people go to reveal their lack of comprehension and how stupid they are, but in a smug way? Goodreads, that’s it!

My nan rarely swore but the above and a neighbour struggling to find a swearword bad enough for her ten-yr-old son after he did something bold, only to settle on “Hoormaster” were two of her favourite vignettes

My nan was in Lynch’s once and a group of women were cooing over a newborn at the counter. A young lad behind them waiting to pay for his sweets sighed impatiently. “Isn’t the baby lovely” one of the ladies said to him. In the broadest Cavan accent you can imagine he replied: “He’s a fuckin bastard”

In a restaurant last night, out of the corner of my eye I saw the little lamp falling off our table and I caught it with a smooth nonchalant reflex, drawing admiring ooohs from the table next to us.

‘Wanderer above the Sea of Fog’ is my least favourite of Caspar David Friedrich’s paintings, and I think it’s because I can’t get it out of my head that the figure at the centre is Mick Hucknall from Simply Red

From Sara Baume’s Seven Steeples
Sigh had been sorting pencils, one afternoon.
They came from old boxes and cases and desk organ-isers. They were stubby and chewed and blunt. He rose from the place where he had been sitting and approached Bell, who was sitting in a close by but different place. He leaned over her shoulder and held them out. He splayed them across his open palm and fingered through their skinny trunks, pencil by pencil, jabbing them apart.
Him is yours, Sigh said, and him, and him, because Bell liked the 4Bs and over, whereas Sigh
liked the 3Bs and under.
She was graphite and charcoal; he was every kind of H.

In the 'The Lustre Bowl,' (1908) William Nicholson plays with the shining contrast of the bowl against a dark black background. He would set up a still life and leave it untouched for days, absorbing every element. The flash of light lifts the picture out of the ordinary.
