On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

1/2 This autumnal-looking #sphagnum was found at Bleaklow by a member of our team. Some sphagnum species change colour through the seasons, with more reds, browns, and oranges in autumn and winter and more greens in spring and summer, but some species stay the same colour all year round.

I am a mom and scientist begging everyone to look closer at the muck. We’ve been conditioned to see wetlands as wastelands. But three decades of research, I see a fiercely defiant wilderness. The boreal mire is a dynamic carbon-trapping vault that in some places has outlasted ice ages. 1/

The nurdles on our Tyneside coast are back with a vengeance today, both depressing in and of itself but also a clear indication of what will happen periodically over the coming months and years and tides and winds bring some of the many millions of plastic pellets still swirling around in our seas.
Thousands of white nurdles (plastic pellets) strewn across Whitley Bay beach, amidst seaweed and sand. Hundreds of whales strand on a remote beach – and no one notices for months. Strandings can be an early warning system for ocean health, flagging pollution, disease, and environmental change. But in remote areas, they often go unseen. 🐳 🧵1/2

Today is World Refugee Day. Here’s a poem called ‘Refugees’.
Refugees

They have no need of our help
So do not tell me
These haggard faces could belong to you or me
Should life have dealt a different hand
We need to see them for who they really are
Chancers and scroungers
Layabouts and loungers
With bombs up their sleeves
Cut-throats and thieves
They are not
Welcome here
We should make them
Go back to where they came from
They cannot
Share our food
Share our homes
Share our countries
Instead let us
Build a wall to keep them out
It is not okay to say
These are people just like us
A place should only belong to those who are born there
Do not be so stupid to think that
The world can be looked at another way

(now read from bottom to top)

How off the chart are current French temperatures ? Quite a lot. Simple #dataviz using daily national temperature index since 1950 with #Rstats and #ggplot #climate
Scatter plot titled "Daily national temperatures since 1950, France." The x-axis shows months from January to December, and the y-axis shows the national temperature index from 0°C to 30°C. Tens of thousands of grey dots form an arch-shaped curve, representing daily national temperature readings for each day of the year across all years since 1950, peaking around August at roughly 25–28°C and dipping to near 0°C in winter. A cluster of red dots near late May and early June 2026 stands out above the historical distribution, reaching approximately 26°C — well above the typical range for that time of year. A curved arrow points to the topmost red dot, labelled "26 May 2026." The chart is attributed to @denismongin.bsky.social with data from infoclimat.fr.
