1/2 This autumnal-looking #sphagnum was found at Bleaklow by a member of our team. Some sphagnum species change colour through the seasons, with more reds, browns, and oranges in autumn and winter and more greens in spring and summer, but some species stay the same colour all year round.

Keep an eye out for the glossy leaves and bright red berries of Cowberry on the moors. In late summer, cowberry adds a splash of eye-catching red-and-green amongst the other colourful moorland plants. #Biodiversity #Peatlands
A bush with small, bright green, oval-shaped leaves, dotted with bright red round berries fills the foreground of the image. There is a mix of brown and green foliage in the background, giving the image and autumnal feel.

Did you know that sphagnum mosses can hold up to 20x their own weight in water? This ability makes sphagnum one of the key elements of a blanket bog that is resilient to the effects of extreme weather, from droughts to extreme rainfall. #SphagnumMonday #Biodiversity #NaturalFloodManagement

Moorland pools provide habitats for invertebrates, including dragonflies. Adult dragonflies are incredibly successful hunters, capturing up to 95% of the prey they target. They can fly in all directions, including backwards and sideways as they hunt for small flying insects.
