also - this article highlights a response from Reed to Brigham in pink blocking that is used throughout the article for quotes, implying this is a direct quote (compare to second screenshot). But it's not a quote! Brigham is paraphrasing Reed, not quoting her -"something to the effect of..."
When Brigham asked Reed in her interview about how Reed writes for a trans audience, Reed paused, looked conflicted, and responded with something to the effect of:

Our main audience isn’t trans people; it’s the cis family members of trans people.

(the website has the last sentence displayed over the same box that the article uses for actual quotes, but this is a paraphrase not a quote)

I too used AI to determine if the article below includes AI generated content and it turns out that by the article's own standards, it does!
Their own method flags their own article. Their "presence rule" treats any straight apostrophe or quote in a paragraph as evidence of pasting from an LLM. Here's what's in their own writing:

Section 1.1 has "doesn't" twice with straight apostrophes, next to a curly "That’s."
"aren't" in 6.2 is straight.
Altman's "small-but-happy win" is in straight quotes.
"‘pasted content test'" opens curly and closes straight.

By their standard, those paragraphs were machine-pasted. I'm reading a converted copy, so it's worth checking the page source, but mixed marks inside one phrase are hard to blame on conversion. This doesn't prove AI either way. It shows how many innocent sources of straight quotes exist: Google Docs settings, phone keyboards, Notion, pasting between drafts, co-authors with different setups. That's also the load-bearing weakness in their case against Reed.

This is an embarrassing claim, honestly, like I just read through like five of her posts and while yeah this is a small sample size, i do not understand how two women with postgraduate education are struggling to understand Reed's writing. It is simply not complex!
Both of the people involved in this investigation often struggled to understand what she was saying in her recent articles, despite both having postgraduate education. We can’t imagine how someone with a high school degree or less would be able to get any meaningful information out of her recent work.

We'll see what the response is, and I eagerly await some further expert analysis here. But there's something about this that, even if the exact nature of the AI allegations are overbaked, feels inevitable when the business model is mass producing articles that feed doomer tendencies in 2026.

Their evidence regarding Reed's use of em dashes is overstated and unfalsifiable (also self crit and full disclosure -this shows that using machine learning for this kind of analysis risks overstating the meaning of the collected evidence)
The em dash timeline cuts against them. By their own description, spaced hyphens faded over 2023 and em dashes didn't really take off until February 2025, about two years apart. That's gradual habit drift, not a light switch. Her em dash rate also didn't jump in February 2026, when she supposedly switched to a heavier em dash user. And their 6.5.3 predictions are rigged: nearly every scenario, including "she stops using AI," predicts the same outcome. It's in section 6.5, "Em Dashes," spread across three subsections:

The two-year gap: section 6.5.1, the chart "Dashes Fall, While Em Dashes Rise." Its description says her spaced hyphens fade over the first half of 2023, and her em dashes stay under 2 per 1,000 words through 2024, then jump in February 2025. The chart text itself says "the two turning points are around two years apart." The "light switch" contrast is mine; that's their phrase for the straight-quote change in 6.2.3.
No jump in February 2026: section 6.5.2, "Em Dashes in Claude's Writing," where they say her em dash usage in 2026 is roughly what it was the year before. I need to retract my point here. Their story is ChatGPT in 2025, then Claude in 2026, and they say both used em dashes heavily. So their own theory predicts a flat line, and a flat line is what they found. That's consistent with them, not against them. It's just as consistent with no AI at all, so it's neutral evidence. I overstated it.
The predictions: section 6.5.3, "Em Dashes in the Future," the four numbered scenarios. Switching to Opus 5.5, switching away from Claude, or quitting AI all predict a drop, and staying on the same Claude predicts no change. So a drop confirms them and a flat line confirms them. "Rigged" was a bit strong for what's really an unfalsifiable setup: they didn't name any outcome that would count against them.

the Washington Sun source article had quotes both from Platner and from Wood. One of the Wood quotes, Reed mistakenly attributes to Platner. (The Needle itself mistakenly claimed that the source had no Platner quotes at all, but it did, and Reed quoted it correctly.)

I used machine learning to assess some of the claims in this article (turnabout is fair play after all) and here's what we found: Complex sentences with straight apostrophes are scored as "copied" and simple sentences are scored as typed. But of course complex have apostrophes!
The pasted-vs-typed comparison is mostly circular. A paragraph counts as "pasted" if it contains any straight apostrophe or quote. Everything else counts as "typed," including paragraphs with no quote marks at all. Longer paragraphs and sentences are simply more likely to contain an apostrophe. So "pasted paragraphs are longer, wordier, and harder to read" partly falls out of the definition. The comparison that would mean something is straight-marked vs curly-marked paragraphs, and I didn't see it.

This one is all me. "We could not get Claude to replicate Reed's writing that we already determined was written by Claude." What are we doing here, kids?
It’s also concerning that 2 of her articles in 2025-26 are more noticeably like the writing of Claude Opus 5 than anything we got Claude to write as part of this test. Worse still, 21 of her articles in the same period read as being more likely to have been written by Claude than the average of the articles we got Claude to write. All 21 of these occur after she switched to Claude.

As Claude points out, human errors aren't evidence of AI use, and a model producing a real deadname is far less likely than a human accidentally typing it. Also, if i were a writer for the Needle, I simply would not criticize competitors for a "litany of errors in 2026 alone"!
Errors aren't AI evidence. Humans misattribute adjacent quotes constantly. The deadnaming, if accurate, is serious, but "only an LLM could have produced it" is speculation. It's also odd reasoning, since a model producing a real, unpublished deadname would be the less likely explanation. Their German-guidelines section even contradicts itself: it gives the release date as both Sep. 30 and Sep. 9, and calls a six-month gap "seven months."Her litany of errors in 2026 includes deadnaming and misgendering a competing trans journalist who broke a story for one of her competitors! This was seven months ago, and the deadname is still up as of writing.

This is really important to flag because there is a tendency among Bluesky centrists to blame 3 specific trans women discouraging trans people from voting by criticizing democrats when the reality of trans people not voting is because of actual GOP voter suppression around our IDs.
A new study from the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law found that one in four transgender Americans will face significant hurdles in voting this fall and nine percent will face the real prospect of disenfranchisement because of mismatching identification documents.
