So apparently she published her claude work as an artifact (she could have just sent me the link to this instead of blocking me but whatever) and it seems like she left out some stuff that Claude flagged as limitations of her analysis
What this does and does not show
It shows who ended up blocked, not why. Nothing here can see inside the bot or prove intent. What it shows is that the outcome is not identity-neutral.
The evidence is strongest for the bulk loads. For posts written after the bot went live the gap points the same way, but only 30 trans-identified accounts are in that window and chance cannot be ruled out.
Only posts addressed to him are compared. The bulk loads drew on posts about him elsewhere on the site. If trans accounts were harsher there, that would explain part of the gap.
The toxicity score is a generic model. It misreads sarcasm and tends to over-score queer language, which would shrink the measured gap, not widen it.
Identity is self-description only. Trans people with nothing in their bio are counted as “everyone else”, which also shrinks the gap.
Deleted posts are invisible, and 114 blocked accounts no longer have a readable profile.
No account is named here. The page carries counts and anonymous flags only.

This is the most tenuous part of this data analysis. First, we have no idea how she defined "mild vs harsh" - she blocked me when I asked for her methodology, so for some reason she is unwilling to share.
Aida

"Maybe trans people were just ruder to him." Fair. So I scored every reply and quote.

Very mild posts: 16% of everyone else blocked, 38% of trans people. Harsh posts: 59% vs 77%. Same words, different outcome, at every level.

Kate Huney, special counsel for criminal policy and practice at King County's Department of Public Defense, said she's
the Court Resource Center don't meaningfully address the conditions that lead people to commit petty crimes in the first place, particularly homelessness.
About 30 percent of people fail to show up for municipal court hearings because they
notices, Hurley said, yet "there's no connection to housing, which is what many people who are prosecuted for low-level behaviors struggle with." and
Hurley, from DPD, called the new program counterproductive. The new two-strikes rule for shoplifting, she said, wasạẠvery alarming for usạbecause it means that anyone who steals from the same store twice will be subject to a higher level of prosecution, regardless of what led them to commit the second theft. Many people who steal small items from stores are homeless or have other underlying conditions, Hurley said-like the woman DPD defended last year who was charged with theft for stealing $5 in candy from a CVS that had previously issued a tresp v order against her.

The speaker even floated a decidedly less glamorous career change: starting a lawn business back home in Louisiana.
“If God moves on our hearts and says we should, you know, go back to my hometown of Shreveport and start a lawn business, I’ll do that with equal fervor,” Johnson said. “I mean, I just want to be of my highest and best use… to God and to my country.”

The Third Way is effectively to the left of the Bluesky Centrist Cadre who have defended triangulation on rhetoric about trans kids
Emphasize the harm these bans will cause to all women and girls by talking about how these invasive policies would require young girls undergo genital inspections, submit up-to-date information on their menstrual cycle, and undergo physical examinations in order to play sports.
Make it personal to parents by highlighting that these bans won’t just affect transgender children—their children will be affected as well.
Pivot to another solution. This issue is complicated, and we need to trust the people closest to these situations—parents, schools, and doctors—to make these decisions, not politicians.
Hit politicians who are pushing these laws for having the wrong priorities. They should be focusing on addressing inflation and the economy instead of passing invasive laws that target young girls.

also - this article highlights a response from Reed to Brigham in pink blocking that is used throughout the article for quotes, implying this is a direct quote (compare to second screenshot). But it's not a quote! Brigham is paraphrasing Reed, not quoting her -"something to the effect of..."
When Brigham asked Reed in her interview about how Reed writes for a trans audience, Reed paused, looked conflicted, and responded with something to the effect of:

Our main audience isn’t trans people; it’s the cis family members of trans people.

(the website has the last sentence displayed over the same box that the article uses for actual quotes, but this is a paraphrase not a quote)

This is an embarrassing claim, honestly, like I just read through like five of her posts and while yeah this is a small sample size, i do not understand how two women with postgraduate education are struggling to understand Reed's writing. It is simply not complex!
Both of the people involved in this investigation often struggled to understand what she was saying in her recent articles, despite both having postgraduate education. We can’t imagine how someone with a high school degree or less would be able to get any meaningful information out of her recent work.

As Claude points out, human errors aren't evidence of AI use, and a model producing a real deadname is far less likely than a human accidentally typing it. Also, if i were a writer for the Needle, I simply would not criticize competitors for a "litany of errors in 2026 alone"!
Errors aren't AI evidence. Humans misattribute adjacent quotes constantly. The deadnaming, if accurate, is serious, but "only an LLM could have produced it" is speculation. It's also odd reasoning, since a model producing a real, unpublished deadname would be the less likely explanation. Their German-guidelines section even contradicts itself: it gives the release date as both Sep. 30 and Sep. 9, and calls a six-month gap "seven months."Her litany of errors in 2026 includes deadnaming and misgendering a competing trans journalist who broke a story for one of her competitors! This was seven months ago, and the deadname is still up as of writing.

They have no data from 2025 and somehow conclude that she used ChatGPT! This is called lying, not journalism
The model attribution is look-elsewhere reasoning. They admit 2025 is invisible to their test, then assert she used ChatGPT anyway. Model releases are frequent, so some release will always land within four days of any change. And by their own table, Opus 4.5 already produced straight quotes months earlier, so the Opus 4.6 date explains nothing.

Their evidence regarding Reed's use of em dashes is overstated and unfalsifiable (also self crit and full disclosure -this shows that using machine learning for this kind of analysis risks overstating the meaning of the collected evidence)
The em dash timeline cuts against them. By their own description, spaced hyphens faded over 2023 and em dashes didn't really take off until February 2025, about two years apart. That's gradual habit drift, not a light switch. Her em dash rate also didn't jump in February 2026, when she supposedly switched to a heavier em dash user. And their 6.5.3 predictions are rigged: nearly every scenario, including "she stops using AI," predicts the same outcome. It's in section 6.5, "Em Dashes," spread across three subsections:

The two-year gap: section 6.5.1, the chart "Dashes Fall, While Em Dashes Rise." Its description says her spaced hyphens fade over the first half of 2023, and her em dashes stay under 2 per 1,000 words through 2024, then jump in February 2025. The chart text itself says "the two turning points are around two years apart." The "light switch" contrast is mine; that's their phrase for the straight-quote change in 6.2.3.
No jump in February 2026: section 6.5.2, "Em Dashes in Claude's Writing," where they say her em dash usage in 2026 is roughly what it was the year before. I need to retract my point here. Their story is ChatGPT in 2025, then Claude in 2026, and they say both used em dashes heavily. So their own theory predicts a flat line, and a flat line is what they found. That's consistent with them, not against them. It's just as consistent with no AI at all, so it's neutral evidence. I overstated it.
The predictions: section 6.5.3, "Em Dashes in the Future," the four numbered scenarios. Switching to Opus 5.5, switching away from Claude, or quitting AI all predict a drop, and staying on the same Claude predicts no change. So a drop confirms them and a flat line confirms them. "Rigged" was a bit strong for what's really an unfalsifiable setup: they didn't name any outcome that would count against them.

This one is all me. "We could not get Claude to replicate Reed's writing that we already determined was written by Claude." What are we doing here, kids?
It’s also concerning that 2 of her articles in 2025-26 are more noticeably like the writing of Claude Opus 5 than anything we got Claude to write as part of this test. Worse still, 21 of her articles in the same period read as being more likely to have been written by Claude than the average of the articles we got Claude to write. All 21 of these occur after she switched to Claude.

Jane Ball (living dead girl) @jane.inurhead.lol · 30/09/2026
They state that Reed's 2022 writing is news round ups that read like twitter threads, then compare these to her full length writing 4 years later now that she is full time. Of course her sentences are getting more complex! This is what happens when writers improve their craft over time!
The baseline is a different genre. Their own section 6.1 says her 2022 output was news roundups that read "more like a Twitter thread," written before she went full-time. Comparing that to 2026 full-length articles will shift function words, readability, and Burrows' Delta without any AI involved. "More similar to her employee than to 2022 Reed" is also what an in-house style converging on one beat looks like.

Their own style test scored writing that they identified as Reed's typing as closer to Claudish than it scored writing they identified as copied. It also scored Reed as closer to them than to Claude and they handwave this by using their thesis question as proof.
Their own style test contradicts the pasting theory. In both the 2023–24 and 2026 "model lean" charts, her typed text and pasted text score almost identically. In 2026, the typed text actually leans slightly more toward Claude (+0.157 vs +0.136). If the pasted paragraphs were Claude and the typed ones were her, those should diverge.Longer description (for a caption or linked description):

A horizontal dot plot with two rows, Pasted (n=39) and Typed (n=24). Each dot is one Erin Reed article. The x-axis runs from −0.5 to +0.5, with a dashed vertical line at 0 labeled "no lean." Values to the left mean the article is more like GPT-5.2; values to the right mean it is more like Claude Opus 5.

Pasted articles range from about −0.18 to +0.32. Three fall left of zero; the rest sit between 0 and +0.32. The median is +0.136.

Typed articles range from about −0.05 to +0.36, mostly between +0.05 and +0.26. The median is +0.157.

A line connects the two medians, showing the typed median slightly to the right of the pasted median. The caption reads: "Value = P(LLM | Claude anchor) − P(LLM | GPT-5.2 anchor). Positive = leans toward Claude. Each dot is one Reed article. Source: Erin Reed's Substack archive. In house analysis by The Needle."Their topic-model detector leaks topic. The "machine" examples were generated from Reed's own headlines, and the "human" examples are the Needle's writers. A topic model will partly learn "writes about Reed's subjects." Even so, her 2025–26 average (0.302) sits much closer to the human bylines (0.18–0.21) than to Claude (0.61–0.75). They concede this is the strongest exculpatory result and wave it off.The strongest evidence in favor of Reed not using AI is from the same six-phased test that shows her writing drifts towards Claude, and this 17 model benchmark can only reliably tell whether something is 100% AI if the writing in question is actually 100% written by AI. Since we know that Reed mixes the LLM with her own writing, this cannot be used to exonerate her.

Jane Ball (living dead girl) @jane.inurhead.lol · 30/09/2026
With that in mind, they massively inflate the sample size by treating each paragraph as a discrete event rather than part of a whole. If a post was drafted on a mobile device or in google docs, every paragraph in it would have the same punctuation style. The actual sample size is 754, not 11,474
The p-values are inflated. They treat thousands of paragraphs as independent when they're clustered inside articles. A p of 10⁻³¹³ is a sign of pseudoreplication, not strength.A p-value assumes every data point is an independent observation. Their paragraphs aren't.

The classic example: you want to know if a fertilizer works, so you treat 2 plants and leave 2 alone. Then you measure 500 leaves on each and run your stats as if n = 2,000. You'll get a gorgeous p-value, but you really tested 4 plants. Leaves on the same plant share soil, water and genes, so they aren't separate experiments.

Paragraphs work the same way. Paragraphs in one article share:

the same drafting session and tool,
the same topic and source documents,
the same deadline pressure and mood.

If one day's article was drafted in a straight-quote editor, or built around a long court filing, all its paragraphs get tagged and shifted together. That's one event, not forty data points. Their 11,474 paragraphs come from 754 articles, and the 2026 comparison is really about 91 articles, some published the same day and maybe drafted in the same session. The honest n is in the dozens-to-hundreds, not thousands.

Why that matters: p-values shrink fast as n grows. Count every paragraph as independent and the statistics think you've run thousands of experiments, so they report absurd certainty. For scale, 10⁻³¹³ is smaller than the smallest number ordinary floating-point arithmetic can represent at full precision. No real-world claim about human behavior deserves that. When you see a number like that, the model is overcounting.

The fix is standard:

Average per article, then compare articles, or
use a mixed-effects model with article as a grouping factor, or
bootstrap by resampling whole articles instead of paragraphs.

I used machine learning to assess some of the claims in this article (turnabout is fair play after all) and here's what we found: Complex sentences with straight apostrophes are scored as "copied" and simple sentences are scored as typed. But of course complex have apostrophes!
The pasted-vs-typed comparison is mostly circular. A paragraph counts as "pasted" if it contains any straight apostrophe or quote. Everything else counts as "typed," including paragraphs with no quote marks at all. Longer paragraphs and sentences are simply more likely to contain an apostrophe. So "pasted paragraphs are longer, wordier, and harder to read" partly falls out of the definition. The comparison that would mean something is straight-marked vs curly-marked paragraphs, and I didn't see it.
1192
Jane Ball (living dead girl) @jane.inurhead.lol · 30/09/2026
I too used AI to determine if the article below includes AI generated content and it turns out that by the article's own standards, it does!
Their own method flags their own article. Their "presence rule" treats any straight apostrophe or quote in a paragraph as evidence of pasting from an LLM. Here's what's in their own writing:

Section 1.1 has "doesn't" twice with straight apostrophes, next to a curly "That’s."
"aren't" in 6.2 is straight.
Altman's "small-but-happy win" is in straight quotes.
"‘pasted content test'" opens curly and closes straight.

By their standard, those paragraphs were machine-pasted. I'm reading a converted copy, so it's worth checking the page source, but mixed marks inside one phrase are hard to blame on conversion. This doesn't prove AI either way. It shows how many innocent sources of straight quotes exist: Google Docs settings, phone keyboards, Notion, pasting between drafts, co-authors with different setups. That's also the load-bearing weakness in their case against Reed.

This is really important to flag because there is a tendency among Bluesky centrists to blame 3 specific trans women discouraging trans people from voting by criticizing democrats when the reality of trans people not voting is because of actual GOP voter suppression around our IDs.
A new study from the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law found that one in four transgender Americans will face significant hurdles in voting this fall and nine percent will face the real prospect of disenfranchisement because of mismatching identification documents.

“For Democrats, it’s really not clear to me they have had good messaging on this issue,” Haider-Markel said. “I think it’s historically comparable to any point in history, when those in power are punching down at the weakest in society. When you concede to them these points, you’re conceding that it’s OK to punch down and letting them position themselves to ask for even more.”

As many of us have repeatedly said, there is no actual evidence that the anti-trans messaging help Trump in 2024 and lots of evidence it harmed the GOP in 2025.
“It’s very clear Republicans think this works, and even when you listen to political pundits talk about this on CNN or elsewhere, they seem to have accepted this idea,” said Don Haider-Markel, a professor at the University of Kansas who has studied the links between public opinion and policy for 25 years. “But as a social scientist, I can say there aren’t any studies to say this worked in 2024. And the evidence from special elections and off-cycle elections in 2025 suggests that it didn’t help Republicans at all.”

The poster in question deleted it i believe, but it was this
@wolfgangbrooks.bsky.social

Trans rights or Trans camps. You chose the camps and you're blaming Dems. Fuck off.

importantly, Juni said this at the time and again less than a year ago.

Ngl, if aaron had just been like
"Yeah, so what, I liked porn"
I would have liked him more, that's the only relatable thing I've ever seen him dohi aaron! I've been pretty consistently trying to deflect the hate and harassment away from you so that I can get an actual response from you.
I expected that you'd misclicked.
what i didn't expect was to be permabanned and have my appeal denied in 7 minutes
I'm still open to a conversation

shit like this is why mods don't take our complaints about harassment seriously 1) it was *not* underage porn 2) Juni's account was restored literally hours, not weeks, later 3) likes are still public but have literally never been displayed in the app, that's why the bot was made in the first place
@unwisewoman.bsky.social
he got caught one night liking underage porn by a bot, permambanned the bot owner with no reason or justification (unbanned her after weeks long outcry) played the like off as a misclick, and then made likes nonpublic

yeah mikey, narcissism and oppositional defiance IS the through line, isn't it?

Turns out the only consistent through line is narcissism and oppositional defiance disorder.
Who'd'a thunk it.

it's now been 15 days since Paulauski mentioned Mary Peltola and 7 days since he was excoriating Parker for being ableist. He still hasn't acknowledged Peltola's ableist and homophobic comments. He doesn't care about these issues - his purpose is reactionary opposition to anything progressive

Turns out a coalition of people held together primarily by the *opposition* to something (establishment Dems), rather than a commitment to *positive* actions/ goals, falls apart the moment the opposition no longer exists (winning the primary).

Then why did you say this?

Jane Ball (living dead girl) @jane.inurhead.lol · 27/09/2026
You're being too clever by half. Your thesis, shown here, is that there are many trans women on hrt for less than two years who are competing in women's leagues. This isn't true - and you admit you don't know of ANY instances of this being true, yet you state it as if it were undisputed.

Because there is a real unfair balance for many trans women competing in women leagues.
I do not know the best answer. But insisting all trans women must be allowed to compete as a woman in all female sports is automatically creating push back.

do you deny that you said this? Do you deny that you don't know of any instances of trans women who have been on hrt for less than two years competing in women's leagues?
Marvin

A person who grows up having testosterone (a steroid) pumping through their body then transitions into a woman and competes against women who have never had testosterone steroids pumping through their system.
I support trans rights, but we also need to be rational here.

Huh? As far as I am concerned trans women are women. Simple.
I only spoke about in sports. A trans woman who hasn't even begun transitioning competing in women's sports is not fair.
