In Herzog's (excellent) Nosferatu, they call Count Orlok by Dracula's name. Which isn't right, imo, Orlok is a very different character, not just his Wisborgian non-Union equivalent.

Finding Antony & Cleopatra a hotter, more romantic play than the post-adolescent view of love as offered by Romeo & Juliet on first read. Greatly helped by the character of Cleopatra having a personality.

I'm as surprised as anyone, but, once again, the greatest show of all time is the 1997 Craig Charles pirate sitcom Captain Butler.

With the extremely honourable exceptions of Prince & Leonard Cohen, I don't need my cis-het songwriters on the topic of being horny. Saying that, I listened to the Ed Sheeran songs I like and, even with that allowance made, the way the guy writes about about vanilla sexuality kind of grosses me out.

Right on time.
“I’ve come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies,” writes Douglas Adams in The Salmon of Doubt.

1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.

2. Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

3. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.Dyson CameraJet: The only toothbrush with a camera and a jet, to target the gaps and remove plaque between your teeth

Oh yeah. This is my kind of book. The best books have these guys.
had a bipartisan tradition and a conservative Democratic leadership. It was another story in the eighty-member Assembly, which was led and often ruled by Jesse Marvin Unruh, its flamboyant speaker. Unruh had been such a thorn in Pat Brown’s side that a Brown aide told me that the one solace in Brown’s crushing defeat was that “the Unruh problem” was now Reagan’s.

Unruh would have been a handful for any governor. Nicknamed “Big Daddy” for a supposed resemblance to the rotund and domineering father in the Tennessee Williams play _Cat on a Hot Tin Roof_, Unruh was a contradictory figure with gargantuan appetites for power, food, booze, and sex—especially power. He was alternately principled and devious, sophisticated and crude, thoughtful and impulsive, visionary and myopic. Unruh delighted in the exercise of raw power; his fellow (also powerful) Democrat in the State Senate, George Miller Jr., once called him “Little Nero.” In a notable display of pettiness, Unruh refused to replace the broken typewriter of a secretary for a Republican legislator who had voted against him on a minor bill. But Unruh was also the leader of a national movement to improve the seedy image and second-class status of state legislators. Even his numerous enemies acknowledged that he had upgraded the quality of the California Legislature and equipped it with a capable professional staff.

Unruh was as self-taught as Reagan, with even humbler roots. The son of Texas sharecroppers with limited schooling, he had enlisted in the Navy during World War II and improved his language skills by reading self-help texts such as _Thirty Days to a Better Vocabulary_. After World War II, he attended the University of Southern California on the GI Bill of Rights, plunged into campus politics, and wrote for the _Daily Trojan_, then an excellent collegiate newspaper. As a dirt-poor liberal, he was attracted to left-wing causes and had a brief flirtation with the Communists, whom he respected for their organi…

I do find Chaucer's Canterbury Tales great company and it succeeds in raising quite a few smiles, but the earliest, so far, that's *very* funny to me is Don Quixote. It's asinine to call it modern feeling, but it has moments that are funny like a variety of my favourite humourists.

Late 60s, early 70s Dylan records are a clear attempt to dissolve the worrying cult of personality that he had purposely built & then become scared of. They are "Get away from my bins!" albums & sometimes bad. Springsteen made some "Get away from my bins!" LPs post BitUSA, but kept the quality up.

Paul Schrader isn't the type of creative 2026 can sustain. His biography was bound for an early death by drugs, drink, or his own decision sometime in the Reagan administration. The guy using AI is a historical error. Like receiving an email sent by Ernie Wise.

London night transport was enviable, man. It wasn't SAFE but it was usually reliable. I could be drinking a pint in the smoking area of a Croydon night club, see the N68 coming, finish my beer and, in theory, be dropped off within 4 minutes walk of my ma's flat.
