Doing a 60th anniversary TOS viewing… I might, generally, be more of a TNG and DS9 guy, but among the things TOS has that no subsequent iteration possesses…it’s frightening. It’s eerie. It has such a unique soundscape.

Loved this as a kid. My parents assumed - as it was a cartoon - it was an appropriate video hire for a kid in single digits….It wasn’t, but I adored it. Damn, I should never have sourced a copy in my 20s…it’s not all that, sadly, but it felt epic as a kiddo!

Can’t help thinking ‘brave’ means - ‘get it as close to 2006 as you can.’ Similar to how I imagine the Amazon (spit!) Bond production team is thinking. We’re too deep into end-stage neoliberalism for innovation, new ideas, or being daring. They’ll want Tennant 2.0 & Craig 2.0 & I’m sooo bored 😂

Keanu igetting a lot of flack on this thread, so I’m going to defend: As Don John, he goes for a unshowy earnestness that is far preferable to the indulgent mugging 85% of the cast of MAAN are engaged in. In the ham-fest of the (still wonderful) Dracula, he struggles with an accent. So what?

I’ve seen many-a-horror film but, in terms of being properly wakes-up-at-3am-unsettled kind of scared, there isn’t a theatrical-release movie that has done a number on me like this slice of 1970s telly…

Working class lad from a council estate here. The old BBC gave me access to John Berger, Robert Hughes, Bronowski, Gluck/Monteverdi/ Wagner operas, Shakespeare plays & Murnau & Welles films… & I watched them as I did Grange Hill or Dr Who. I wasn’t told it was ‘too elitist’ for the likes of me.

60 years of Trekkin! Haven’t seen TOS in years but I remember this one being the episode I enjoyed the most. War criminals, Shakespeare, and (IIRC) it actually avoided being pat about the politics and ethics, while still being in that SF Romance style. Looks great too. Conscience of the Kimg

When you’re a Tory boy ‘Who nerd…but you dress like the most explicitly left-leaning version; the one who brought down Space-Thatcher, likened free market dogma to actual savagery & pointed out British war crimes in the 1940s…*That* Dr Who..? 🤪

Chimes! Shout outs for Jane Howell’s Henry VI - Richard III for the beeb, & the Elijah Moshinski’s All’s Well… Oh, Nunn’s Maccers with Dench & McKellan. Richard Eyre’s Lear with Ian Holm. Others….

Tricky…Probably Lee, but only from Prince of Darkness onwards, cos he’s got all thay extra gravitas by being older.

Rewatching The Parallax View. It’s the kind of political conspiracy thriller that became a part of something that turned too many minds to mush…but beneath its brilliant-but-lurid plot is a film that notices everything about the neoliberal restructuring of US society & culture. Damn, these images!

Ended up looking up various music and TV criticism recently for a thing, & so many critics aged 45 & upwards are STILL writing in *tediously mid-90s sneery, po-mo, pseudo-intellectual condescension mode.* RETIRE, FFS…

Put my first attempt at a novel away for a year, after draft 4. Planned out a second one. Returned to the first to give it a buff-up. Despite my modest talent & skill, I’m quite impressed! It reads better than I expected, after such a long gap. Flawed & clumsy as it is, I’m rather pleased with it.

Inspired by @bowiesongs.bsky.social we’ve gone back to The Prisoner for the 1st time in years. Hate that this episode still stands. They promise all & yield to powerful forces instantly. Even the well-meaning are trapped & compromised. Real change is beyond the context of the ballot box.

As a director & actor in this medium too, I can only reiterate this. It’s the subtleties. The nuances. The unpredictability, resulting in unique line-readings that adds more to the story. I’ll give AI eccentric stresses…but they don’t make any sense! And end consonants just seems beyond it

I love James Garner in anything, and Francois Hardy is stunning. It’s got gorgeous locations. But, damn, it’s sooooo long and about the thinnest bibble imaginable, even if you’re into racing.
