The modern Republican party is like a specialized island species where they have no known predators. They are completely unprepared for a hostile environment. They have designed their own simulacrum and no longer how to live among us here, in the Real.

This is a kind of attribution error if true. Those big ticket items have gotten more expensive at a rate almost laughably greater than core inflation; if normal goods prices were flat you still wouldn't be able to afford the big things. But it's easy to see why core inflation would feel so damn bad.

James Hupp @jameshupp.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
And this would increase sensitivity to normal goods inflation if the income increase by a greater amount. You'd never care if you're building wealth! But you're not. So you look at where your money *is* going and damn no wonder I can't build wealth, look at the price of these eggs!

Squares w/ my half-cocked vibecession theory. Income up = normal goods more affordable. But if BIG stuff (college, home, new car, retirement) is out of reach anyway? We're not building any wealth? Then it breaks the "deal" we have in our heads about what making money does for us. Feels bad!

Navi Pillay led the UN commission that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza. It also concluded that Hamas committed war crimes, including sexual violence, on 7 October 2023. It is long past time we stop denying any and all of that.

If you are ever in a place showing the 4K restoration of Days of Heaven, don’t miss it. The current Netflix-sponsored run may be closing everywhere now, not sure (it closes today in NYC), but it’s breathtaking in that format. It gave me the same feeling I get looking at the world from a mountaintop.

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

calling this "misalignment" instead of "negligence" is an accountability dodge. we already have laws about cyber crimes and there's no scale of ML model you can incorporate into your code that makes you not responsible for running it
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company was "conducting an extensive review of misaligned model activity" during training, and notifying third parties when there was a potential impact on their systems.

"During this review, we identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation," they said.

"In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.

Map of the contiguous US, shaded on a continuum of blue to red, with red indicating “most like you”. A light red portion curves roughly from New Mexico through Lake Michigan with its darkest area around St Louis and downstate Illinois. Crudely colored aqua circles in the red section roughly indicate Kansas City, Chicago, DC, and NYC.

I'm curious about curbside as a fueler of last resort. Add it in strategic locations, but mandate a kwh price 300% (or whatever, smarter people than me do the math) of the average off-street price. Then distribute the overage to a local benefit district, the Hidden Cost of Free Parking approach.
