Can't say how much I love this. As a child brought up in poverty, I didn't own a book until I was 11 yrs old. Mum valued education. Took us to public library every week. Dad was functionally illiterate. School libraries were great, too. Books have been central to my life. Share the joy if you can x

The RNLI rescued Luftwaffe pilots in WW2 because the organisation is there to 'save life at sea' - it's something to be immensely proud of. But as I've said many times before Farage and Co don't seem to have pride in Britain and its institutions beyond flags and crap Enoch Powell said 60 years ago.

We were doing dimensional analysis today with Year 12 Physics, and we just had to use Leenie Wilcox blog on the matter. How a Physics Professor estimated the Energy released by an atomic weapon, and found himself in deep trouble with the security services! www.ileaneclectic.com/post/g-i-tay...

G.I. Taylor’s Dimensional Analysis of the Atomic Bomb
In 1938 two chemists and two physicists discovered a scientific phenomenon which made the world’s problems both a lot smaller and a lot bigger. Like every group project since the dawn of time, one person got stiffed in the credits - in this case, Lise Meitner, who wasn’t recognized until much later. They discovered a process called fission [2], which generally goes like this:An atom is made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons [1]. Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of an atom, and are h

Then there is the claim that ADHD is a social construct, not a neurodevelopmental condition. This is something Pemberton concludes after talking to neuroscientist Katya Rubia at King’s College London. Rubia says that while there is evidence of differences between the brains of people with ADHD and neurotypical people at the group level, it isn’t possible to diagnose ADHD from a brain scan.
She is right, of course. You can’t diagnose ADHD from brain scans. The same can be said for most, if not all, psychiatric and neurodevelopmental conditions. Most of these, like ADHD, are diagnosed by assessing symptoms and the effect they have on a person’s everyday ability to function. “My interview was hours long and they cherry-picked the bits that suited their push for presenting ADHD as a myth,” Rubia told New Scientist. “Biased programs like this one that push their view of ADHD as a mythical entity are irresponsible and will have detrimental effects.”

My takeaways: fund libraries (school + public). Make school libraries statutory. Fund author visits (self serving but still valid). Fund books in early years hubs. Teach parents/carers how to read with young children. Make national year of reading a decade. Focus on SEND readers. Focus on poverty.

One of the lessons of the last two years is that Labour urgently needs to stop being afraid of its own shadow. Burnham should appoint whoever he thinks would be the best Chancellor and throw his authority behind them. The Daily Mail will try to kill them anyway. So just govern.

Drilling for more oil & gas in the North Sea won't lower bills, it won't make us more energy independent and it won't insulate us from price shocks. A Labour backslide on this would be a huge betrayal. Double down on renewables. Insulate every home. Lower bills, permanently.
