We were all Indigenous in the Before.

“In our common collective genetic ancestral mind, not one of our ancestors went for the new show. They wouldn’t buy the tickets. So the show was going to die. The show decided rather than die, it would make our ancestors die until they accepted the show. This is what happened. It happened to all of us. Whatever happened to the Indigenous people here [in Turtle Island], trust me, it happened to the tribes in Europe.”

I just said "tomfoolery." I am officially 100 years old. Now I want the perks I'd hoped would come with age. These include (but are not limited to) dispensation for my: outlandish enthusiasm, excessive tenderness, beleaguered wardrobe, and chronically awkward demeanor.

suraj sharma14 posted "Bro, I'm so sick of pretending this isn't weird. The internet spent 20 years creating tutorials, open-source projects, blog posts, answers for free. AI companies turned all of it into products worth billions. And now the same people who created that knowledge are being told they're replaceable. We built the library. They charge admission.

fractally replied "This has been my main argument against AI from the beginning. OpenAI scrapes the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of LLMs and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us. And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this."

Good news. I just got back from the future. There are no more billionaires. AI has been regulated out of oligarch hands. Only ethical scientists and engineers work with it now. There are trees and flowers everywhere because rewilding iniatives went into hyperdrive in 2028, and by 2050 we manage to curb the worst of the floods and forest fires. There are no more starving children because everyone has more than enough food to eat.

Public school lunch debt reached an est 272 million in the 24-25 school year.

US federal direct subsidies for the oil and gas industry-- 30 to 35 billion per year, nearly all of which increase company profits while not increasing supply.

Instead of ensuring every child can count on lunch, our federal priorities are ever more heavily skewed toward increasing billionaire wealth.

“If we want emotionally secure children, we must first secure their mothers. Her well-being isn’t extra; it’s the foundation. You can’t demand calm, present, regulated parenting from someone who’s exhausted, unseen, and structurally unsupported. Caring for a mother means more than self-care slogans; it means real rest, nourishment, and space to feel without shame. Her rage is wisdom. Her exhaustion is data. Her nervous system is the blueprint for her child’s. We cannot keep building futures on the backs of burned-out women and calling it resilience.”

I am not washed & beautiful, in control of a shining world in which everything fits, but instead am wondering awed about on a splintered wreck I've come to care for, whose gnawed trees breathe a delicate air, whose bloodied and scarred creatures are my dearest companions, and whose beauty bats and shines not in its imperfections but overwhelmingly in spite of them...”

"We shall have such a balance of trade as will go far to carry out my often-criticized yet completely sound idea of from $3000 to $5000 per year for every single family—that is, I mean every real American family.”

This is a quote from the 1935 dystopian Sinclair Lewis novel, “It Can’t Happen Here” that warns how fascism could take over the US. A character named Buzz Windrip wins the presidential election by promising economic renewal, traditional values, a return to national greatness…. and $5 K payments to every family. Once elected, Windrip destroys democratic institutions, silences Congress, and creates a private paramilitary force to crush dissent. And the checks never arrive.

text by Joyce Carol Oates "So curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates--- scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (doubtful he reads), pride in a friend or relative's accomplishments, condolences for someone who died, pleasure in sports, acclaim for a favorite team, references to history. In fact he seems totally uneducated, uncultured. The poorest person may have access to more beauty and meaning in life than the 'wealthiest person in the world.'"
