I’ve seen a few folks comment that “Guinea-Bissau is a low income country and cannot afford the hep B vaccine birth dose, so why is this study unethical?” It’s a good question. Let me have a go at answering it. In a nutshell, researchers cannot ethically exploit poverty & scarcity to do a trial

In 2002, Wadi Sūra II was discovered in the Western Desert of Egypt. A small rock overhang was found with painted animals of many types dating to about 7000 years ago. But it was a set of baby-size handprint stencils that presented a puzzle: because they weren't HUMAN hands.
Ochre rock art from the Cave of the Animals, Wadi Sūra II. A predominantly yellow wall has been stenciled and painted with brown pigment showing animals, people as stick figures, and hand stencils.

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk strides purposefully across a vibrant green lawn, looking directly at the camera with an intense, funny expression. Captured mid-stride with its legs wide apart, its heavily feathered thighs resemble poofy, spotted pants or trousers. The hawk’s white chest features a distinctive "belly band" of brown streaks, and its mottled brown and white wings are tucked tightly against its body. The bright sunlight accentuates its fierce yellow eyes, sharp beak, and yellow talons, contrasting sharply with the soft, out-of-focus grassy background.

The 2026 WWF Living Planet Report has been published! 📢 The IPBES Nexus Assessment resonates with the Living Planet Report’s focus on fairness: the response options that scored highest on equity also offered greater effectiveness. —Pamela McElwee, IPBES #NexusAssessment Co-chair
IPBES infographic on dark teal background. Circular photo of Pamela McElwee at a podium. Illustrations of a fish, flowers, whale shark, owl, and thistle. Quote: "The Living Planet Report confirms that declines in biodiversity continue across the globe, driven by energy, farming and financial systems. These drivers were highlighted in the 2024 IPBES Nexus Assessment, which found that US$7 trillion a year is invested in activities that damage nature. Yet there are reasons for optimism. The Nexus Assessment highlighted 71 response options to drive transformation and generate benefits across biodiversity, water, food, health and climate. Because many response options enable and amplify one another, combinations of these solutions can become positive tipping points that shift whole systems." — Pamela McElwee, IPBES Nexus Assessment Co-Chair. A close-up shot of a white Eurasian spoonbill wading in choppy, blue-grey water. The large wading bird is captured from the side, looking slightly toward the camera. It features a distinctive, long black bill that flattens out into a wide, spoon-like shape at the tip, which has a small patch of yellowish-orange coloration. Long, wispy breeding crest feathers flow backward from the top of its head. The bird's crisp white feathers contrast sharply against the rippling water surface surrounding it.
