Wisteria tree at Ashikaga Flower Park, Japan. Photography by KotHat on photohito
Cascading like an ethereal, violet-tinted waterfall from an unseen sky, a curtain of glowing wisteria (fuji) blossoms overhead in a breathtaking nocturnal spectacle. At the base, a thick, ancient trunk twists with muscular grace, its weathered, spiral-grained wood anchoring a vast canopy-like arbor from which countless long, delicate racemes hang in dense, weeping clusters. Soft upward illumination transforms the mass of pale purple and magenta flowers into a luminous, suspended ocean of petals, casting a soft glow onto the petal-strewn earth below. The photograph evokes a dreamy, multi-sensory atmosphere: the sweet, honeyed perfume of evening blossoms heavy in the cool spring night, the faint, rustling whisper of racemes swaying in a gentle breeze, the soft hum of nocturnal garden air, and the quiet, awe-struck hush of standing beneath a ceiling of living light. Captured at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, this magnificent specimen exemplifies the centuries-old Japanese tradition of cultivating grand wisteria arbors (fuji-dana). Cherished since the Heian period as a symbol of nobility, longevity, and refined elegance, wisteria appears throughout classical waka poetry, aristocratic clan crests (kamon), and iconic theater performances such as the kabuki dance Fujimusume ("The Wisteria Maiden"). Preserving a tree of this monumental scale—with branches extending across hundreds of square meters supported by meticulously engineered timber trellises—represents a supreme testament to horticultural monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for living craft). Through generations of dedicated pruning, binding, and care, Japanese arborists have elevated landscape architecture into a living, intergenerational fine art.

Last night’s Harvest Moon over Seattle. The clouds made it feel even more dramatic as it rose above the Space Needle and the Cascades. Also called the Corn Moon, this is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox.

Félix Vallotton : Bridge on the Beal, 1922 Oil on canvas 28.7 × 23.6 in | 73 × 60 cm Further description in the alt text 👇
Composition and Structure:
The landscape is highly stylized and constructed with geometric precision rather than fluid impressionism. The winding yellow road and the structural shape of the bridge create a distinct, forced perspective that draws the viewer's eye into the scene.

Color Palette:
Vallotton used flat, rich areas of color, dominated by a massive, warmly toned ochre-orange tree contrasted against the cool purples and blues of the distant hills and the deep greens of the foreground foliage.

New Objectivity Influence:
The stark lines, smooth finishes, and slightly eerie, unpopulated serenity are strongly aligned with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) movement of the 1920s. The scene carries a psychological weight typical of Vallotton’s work, making the landscape feel almost staged or frozen in time.

here's some #wilderness with a #creek in a #mountain #forest for #WildernessWednesday
up in the Trinity Mountains along Hwy 3, Scott Mountain Creek heads downstream through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest towards its confluence with Tangle Blue Creek which then merges with the Trinity River.
if there was a single highway in northern California that you could drive for sightseeing, I'd say Hwy 3 should be the one.

I visited Tipsoo Lake in Mt. Rainier National Park on the hunt for mountain reflections and alpine wildflowers. The cloudy sky prevented any reflections of Mt. Rainier, but I did discover an abundance of wildflowers! This painting captures the beautiful blooms up close, in impressionistic color. Thick brushstrokes of oil paint laid side by side, without layering, create a mosaic or stained-glass appearance in the landscape.
